Standing at 110 meters, the Cristo-Rei Sanctuary became a significant spiritual landmark in the early 20th century. Today, it serves as a place of prayer and offers stunning views of the capital. Some believe the statue was built as a vow by the Portuguese Episcopate, asking God to keep Portugal out of World War II. The Cardinal declared that this monument would forever symbolize the Portuguese people’s gratitude for the peace they received. It is one of the most iconic symbols adorning the city. • Torre de Belem - The construction of the Portuguese empire necessitated the protection of the Tagus River entrance, ensuring a robust and effective defense system. João II, the defense of the Tagus River’s mouth was organized, featuring artillery coverage as a significant technological advancement. • Miradouro da Senhora do Monte - Known as Monte de S. Gens, this ancient worship site likely dates back to Visigoth or Paleochristian times. • Mosteiro dos Jeronimos - Vasco da Gama attended mass here before his voyage to India. A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983, this Manueline architectural marvel was built from 1501, funded by trade revenues from Africa and the East. This will be a passing visit.
• Padrao dos Descobrimentos - Originally built in 1940 for the Exhibition of the Portuguese World, this monument honors the Portuguese Discoveries. Shaped like a caravel, it features 33 figures linked to the Discoveries. Inaugurated in 1960, it includes a marble compass rose depicting the main routes of the Portuguese Discoveries.
• Praca Luis de Camoes - Luís Vaz de Camões, a renowned poet, is a key figure in Portuguese literature. After surviving a shipwreck, he published “Os Lusíadas,” an epic poem dedicated to King D. Sebastião. The Monument to Camões, inaugurated in 1867, is a significant urban sculpture in Lisbon.
• Praca Marques de Pombal - Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo, known as Marquês de Pombal, was appointed Minister of the Kingdom by King José I. After the 1755 earthquake devastated Lisbon, he led the city’s reconstruction, making significant progress within a year.
• Rossio Square - One of Lisbon’s oldest and busiest squares, it has hosted fairs, bullfights, festivals, and revolutions. Largely destroyed in the 1755 earthquake, it was rebuilt with new Pombaline buildings. The Teatro Nacional D. Maria II, with its neo-Palladian facade, was added in 1846, along with a statue of D. Pedro IV.
• Se de Lisboa - Built in 1147 over a Muslim mosque, this cathedral is Lisbon’s most important religious building. Its architecture blends Romanesque, Gothic, and Baroque styles due to various modifications over time. The cathedral houses the remains of St. Vincent, the city’s patron saint.
• Panteao Nacional - This Baroque monument, with a Greek cross plan and majestic dome, became the National Pantheon in 1916. It houses the remains of notable Portuguese figures like Amália Rodrigues and Eusébio.
• Praca do Comercio (Terreiro do Paco) - Built in 1515 as a royal residence, this square was a central point of Lisbon life during the Age of Discoveries. After the 1775 earthquake, it was transformed into Praça do Comércio as part of Marquês de Pombal’s reconstruction plan.
