We will visit the Holy Trinity Cathedral, one of the largest Orthodox cathedrals globally. Next, we’ll see Saint Gevorg Church, Metekhi Church, and the monument to Vakhtang Gorgasali, the founder of Tbilisi. We’ll then take a cable car to Narikala Fortress for a stunning view of the city. We’ll walk down to the Abanotubani district to see the famous bathhouses and stroll through the Sharden area, known for its narrow streets filled with cozy cafés, wine tasting bars, and souvenir shops. Afterward, we’ll visit the clock tower of the renowned Rezo Gabriadze Theatre and cross the Bridge of Peace to Rike Park.
Overnight stay in Tbilisi.
Day 2: After breakfast, we will drive to Alaverdi Monastery, founded in the 6th century by St. Father Joseph Alaverdeli, who came from Assyria. The name Alaverdi is of Arabic origin and means ‘Bestowed by God.’ The Alaverdi Cathedral is the tallest medieval Georgian architectural monument, standing at 51 meters. It is a cross-type, three-arch construction with three entrances. Alaverdi served as the burial site for the kings of Kakheti during the 11th, 15th, and 18th centuries.
After visiting Alaverdi, we will head to Sighnaghi, known as the city of wine and love. This charming town is perfect for those who enjoy a slower pace and appreciate quaint, lovely settings. Walking through Sighnaghi, you might feel like you’re in Italy due to its architecture, which resembles that of small Italian towns.
Our final destination for the second day is Gremi, the residence of the kings of Kakheti from 1466 to 1614. Here, we will visit the Gremi Fortress, which includes the royal citadel and the Church of the Archangels. The Church of the Archangels was built in 1565 by King Levan, who is buried inside, and features frescoes from 1577.
Overnight stay in Gremi.
Day 3: After breakfast, we will drive to one of Georgia’s oldest cities, Mtskheta, founded in the 5th century BC. The old city is located at the confluence of the Mtkvari and Aragvi rivers. It is home to the Svetitskhoveli Cathedral (11th century) and Jvari Monastery (6th century), both significant monuments of Georgian Christian architecture and crucial to the development of medieval architecture in the Caucasus. Mtskheta, along with Svetitskhoveli Cathedral and Jvari Monastery, is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
