Highlights
  • Lempuyang Temple - Enthusiastic hikers will appreciate the mix of mountains and cultural experiences in Bali’s eastern region. However, those who prefer not to climb to the peak of Lempuyang Temple can still enjoy the stunning views at the grand Pura Penataran Agung temple located at the mountain’s base. This temple, the first to appear on the pilgrimage, is notable for its impressive dragon staircases, making it a great spot for photos. The best views are further up the stairs, offering a panoramic sight of the lush forested slopes and the neighboring Mount Agung, Bali’s highest peak and home to Besakih Temple. Local villagers operate motorcycle taxis that can take you up to where the asphalt ends at Penataran Agung for a negotiable fee, providing a convenient option for those who want to start their climb sooner and reduce the walking time from the parking area.
  • Tirta Gangga - The Tirta Gangga Water Palace gardens showcase a unique blend of Balinese and Chinese architecture. The water garden spans approximately 1.2 hectares and consists of three separate complexes, each featuring ponds and numerous sculptures. The lowest level complex has two large ponds and a water tower, while the middle level houses the swimming pools. The main complex on the third level includes the former Raja’s country home. Today, this former residence of Raja A.A. Anglurah Ketut Karangasem includes a restaurant and four bungalow units. Building water gardens was a favorite hobby of the Raja, who often surprised visitors by working alongside his laborers, standing knee-deep in mud to dig out the earth.
  • Ujung Water Palace - The Taman Ujung Sukasada complex combines Balinese and European architecture across three large ponds connected by elegant bridges and pathways. Its physical features, along with the stunning mountainous backdrop to the north and the sea to the southwest, make it a popular spot for pre-wedding and artistic photographers. The name Ujung means extremity in Indonesian, which helps locals describe its location as one of the island’s largest historical landmarks and points of interest in the easternmost part of the island.
  • Virgin Beach - Relax on a sun deck with a hat and sunglasses, sipping fresh young coconut water and listening to the sound of the waves. This serene experience awaits you at Virgin Beach, a location rarely visited by tourists and less explored by locals. Virgin Beach is known by several names. Foreign tourists often call it Virgin Beach due to its secluded and pristine nature, while others refer to it as White Sand Beach, as it is the only beach in the Karangasem area with white sand. Although the sand is not as white as that of Padang Padang Beach or Pandawa Beach, its color is influenced by the volcanic content of Mount Agung, located about 33 km away. The drive to Virgin Beach takes approximately one and a half hours.
  • Tenganan Ancient Village - Tenganan Village is charming and hosts fascinating traditional festivals, such as ritual dances and gladiator battles among local youths. The villagers are skilled in a unique weaving technique called double ikat, which is believed to have magical properties that enhance the beauty of the ikat cloth. There are various stories about the history of Tenganan Village. Some suggest that the name Tenganan is derived from the word “tengah” or “ngatengahang,” meaning to move to the inner area, reflecting the villagers’ relocation from the seaside to a rural area between two hills, Kauh Hill to the west and Kangin Hill to the east.
  • Goa Lawah Temple - This famous temple is a notable stop on the tour.
  • Candidasa - This renowned beach is another highlight of the tour.

Don't miss the amazing water temples - The Gates of Heaven are nice but the water temples that come after were even more impressive to me. Would recommend this trip or something similar that includes those other temples! The Gates of Heaven are rather far from most hotel areas and even if you leave at 5am you'll wait several hours in the photo taking queue. The water temples have loads of fish you can feed and take pictures with. Fish food is easy to buy next to the entrance. The last part of the trip was a traditional village with their own special guide to tell you about their traditions and old way of life.

Driver was great, Gates of Heaven is beautiful but be prepared to wait! - I had a great experience with my driver. He was thoughtful and courteous (it was raining that day and he had an umbrella and poncho for me). He drove with care and offered me some insight to the Balinese culture along the way. I was able to customize the second 1/2 of my trip to spend more time at a beach and he was happy to accommodate and get me all set up. He even helped me order authentic cuisine at a restaurant. A note about the Gates of Heaven - it was beautiful and some of the best photos I've ever taken in my life and I cherish them. BUT be prepared to wait for a few HOURS. My driver got me there around 6:30-7am and we were 50 in line, each number takes at least 2-5 min (although they do keep it moving). If you do not show up right when it opens or when tickets are available, you will wait HOURS so really judge your time to see if its worth it. Now, the view is very pretty, there are some places to sit and a little store that sells snacks but I would definitely bring a book or a screen to keep you entertained for a while. Additionally, up the hill from the Gates is another picturesque place that has the Bali swing, a heart, and other places to take photos.
