The temple’s creation date remains unknown. Legend tells us that when the earth was a mere 70 years old, the island of Bali was prone to daily earthquakes due to its instability. The god Pacupati, dweller of Mount Sumeru, witnessing this unrest, tasked his three children with the duty of stabilizing Bali. In response, Hyang Gni Jaya, Hyang Putra Jaya, and Dewi Danu were dispatched to Bali in order to settle in three separate locations; Dewi Danu was sent to Mount Batur, Hyang Putra Jaya to Mount Agung, and Hyang Gni Jaya to the Lempuyang Luhur Temple.
