Highlights
  • Kumana National Park - Kumana National Park spans 35,664 hectares. The park is bordered by the River Kumubukkan Oya to the west and the southeastern coast extending to Panama to the south. Within the park lies a 200-hectare mangrove swamp known as “Kumana Villu,” which occasionally floods with seawater. This swamp becomes a nesting ground for many water birds during May and June. The park also features several water pools that are popular with wildlife, including Kudawila wewa, Thummulla wewa, and Kotalinda wewa.

Kumana National Park offers excellent feeding and resting habitats for numerous threatened wetland species, including three turtle species: the Green Turtle (Chelonia mydas), Loggerhead Turtle (Caretta caretta), and the Olive Ridley Turtle (Lepidochelys olivaceae).
