- Cafe Papeneiland - Begin the tour by meeting your guide and fellow participants at Amsterdam’s renowned Dutch ‘bruine kroeg’ (brown pub). Enjoy the famous homemade apple pie with a drink of your choice, just as Bill Clinton once did. This is a perfect way to start the tour in a relaxed manner, get acquainted, and hear intriguing stories such as why the Dutch don’t consider apple pie a dessert and why they prefer it in a brown pub. The guide will also share insights about the history of Amsterdam and the Jordaan neighborhood where the tour takes place.
- V.O.F. Butchery T.F.M. Louman - Visit one of Amsterdam’s most celebrated butcher shops, located in the Jordaan since 1892 and owned by the Louman family for six generations. Experience the authentic Jordaan atmosphere while tasting the finest ‘ossenworst’, a smoked raw beef sausage with oriental spices, originally crafted in the early 17th century by Amsterdam kitchen maids as a luxury treat for wealthy merchants. Additionally, sample a typical Dutch ham, pork sausage, and salted beef.
- Vishandel Centrum - Savor one of the most renowned Dutch delicacies: Dutch herring. Discover its significance in Dutch history and the rise of the “Golden Age.” Experience firsthand why this is a culinary treasure, contrary to the typical stories you may have heard. Also, try the popular hot Dutch fish dish “kibbeling” (fried cod), and the unique Dutch smoked eel. Both were once considered poor man’s food and are now regarded as true specialties.
- ‘t Goede Soet - Like herring and cheese, the stroopwafel is likely one of those Dutch treats you’ve heard about. In Amsterdam, there are numerous tourist shops selling them at high prices with various sweet and colorful dips. Instead, visit Mireille’s store, which has been offering delicious, artisanal stroopwafels for over 25 years, freshly delivered from the bakery daily. Simply delightful and straightforward, just the way the Dutch prefer. While there, also taste a delicious bonbon with a typical Dutch filling, advocaat (egg custard with brandy).
- Bourgondisch Lifestyle Amsterdam - We are incredibly proud of our wonderful food partners and friends who create and sell the most delectable Dutch delicacies. Bourgondisch Lifestyle is an especially unique location we will visit. Not only do we have exclusive access to their special tasting room in a centuries-old Amsterdam house, but here you will also find top Dutch and international cheeses. Owner René and his team purchase, mature, and refine over 300 different cheeses, selling them to numerous top restaurants both locally and internationally from their “cheese fortress,” an early 20th-century bunker outside Amsterdam. All these cheeses are purely artisanal and sourced from small local producers. Taste four different Dutch cheeses (generous portions, not tiny bites) including, of course, the Gouda cheese, accompanied by a delicious wine and crackers.
- Café Nieuw Amsterdam - Conclude the tour at another remarkable location, the “birthplace” of New York. In this former headquarters of the Dutch West India Company, the colony of New Amsterdam was governed, which began with the construction of Fort Amsterdam on Manhattan Island. Brooklyn, Wall Street, Staten Island, and many more places still directly reference Dutch history in New York. We are delighted to share all about it while enjoying the famous ‘bitterballen’ and a refreshing drink such as a local Amsterdam beer or ‘jenever’, the predecessor of English gin.
- Simz Exotic Food Indian & Surinaams Specialiteit - With over 180 nationalities, Amsterdam is one of the most multicultural cities globally. Many residents have roots in Suriname, a former Dutch colony and a country that is itself a melting pot of numerous nationalities worldwide. Dutch cuisine is significantly influenced by Surinamese flavors, and Amsterdam boasts many Suriname eateries. Enjoy a delicious Rendang sandwich with pickles and learn about Dutch colonial history in other countries such as Indonesia and South Africa.
- Amsterdam - This tour will guide you through three Amsterdam neighborhoods: the Jordaan, the Grachtengordel, and the Haarlemmerbuurt. Besides the delightful Dutch food, learn about the history of Amsterdam and its distinctive architecture, such as the leaning houses. Discover why Amsterdam has so many canals (twice as many as Venice, for instance) and when and why the Jordaan was developed. These are just a few examples, and of course, your guide will be happy to answer any questions you may have.
