The best way to experience Dutch Pancakes - What a wonderful way to spend the afternoon learning about Dutch food, agricultural products and culture! We made sweet & savory pancake versions and were able to try other Dutch foods as snacks. Our hostess made us feel welcome and comfortable. The location of her home in the historic district could not have been better.

Great time - We had a great time at this class. The location was great, looking over the canal. We made apple and bacon pancakes. I even learned how to flip it without dropping the pancake. We enjoyed great local wine, fantastic local cheese, and of course delicious pancakes. I would definitely do this again!

Lovely experience! - We had a lovely time with Fusina making Dutch pancakes and chatting about all sorts of things! It's easy to tell how much she loves local food and wants to share it with others. She also communicated promptly and went out of her way to accommodate my specific needs, which was greatly appreciated. I would wholeheartedly recommend the experience to others!

Real amsterdam pancakes! - I had taken this lesson last year and enjoyed it so much that I brought my grandchildren with me on this year's trip. We had a wonderful, memorable time, and now the kids make the morning pancakes!

The Cooking Class that Wasn't - Whenever we go to different places, we like to take a cooking class to get a hands on experience with the local cuisine. Our kids enjoy cooking and we find it helps them connect with the local culture. This time, we were in Amsterdam and searched for a class to learn to make Dutch Pancakes. We spent almost €275 for a family of four (two adults and two kids – ages 9 and 11) on this local activity in the center of Amsterdam. The value for us was not there. I would not recommend this “Pancake Making Class” to anyone that actually wants to learn to make pancakes. It was not a cooking class, it was not even a get involved and do some cooking. My wife and I basically sat at a table drinking tea while the two kids helped Fusina make three pancakes. We expected to get our hands dirty with food and cook. That did not happen. Her kitchen is not set up to host a cooking class. We’ve done several cooking classes both at home and abroad and we’ve always had a space for each person with their own ingredients and utensils to make the dishes. We expected that we were each (especially for the price) making a sweet and savory pancake, not making 1 of each total and if my kids hadn’t begged to make a second savory pancake, I’m pretty sure it would have ended with the two pancakes – the dutch pancakes are thin, somewhat like crepes with the ‘filling’ cooked into the layer instead of being wrapped in the pancake after cooking. We were offered some local delicacies such as cheese and Dutch apple pie, but we were expecting a hands on experience and to enjoy the food that we all worked to prepare. The hostess did not eat anything, just stared at us and asked strange questions. Honestly, it felt like we had paid to sit around a table and entertain the host – a job at which we were abysmal failures according to her review (see below). “The guests were Americans living in Ireland. The 11 year old son broke one of my Delft blue plates. It was a bit strange experience with the kids shoes on my couch, 4 mobile phones on the table, very American way of having a conversation, or trying to have one. The father asked if he could pay for the plate, but I said it was fine. He did not leave a tip, which I would have done. Just wanted to let you know what happened.” Yes, we are American, but what does that have to do with anything? Honestly, I did not feel comfortable with Fusina telling us how she does not like people from Belgium and based on her review of us, she does not like Americans either. Yes, my son did break a plate, only after he tripped over a leg of a chair and fell in a very small kitchen area. We offered to pay for the plate but Fusina refused. As for the 4 mobile phones on the table, yes they were there. My daughter was taking notes on how to cook the pancakes, noting down the recipe and what she needed to do to make them again (something our other cooking classes didn’t need because we were provided copies of the recipes to take home), my wife was taking pictures of the kids helping Fusina make the pancakes and well, I was just bored as my expectations were to cook, not sit, eat snacks and drink tea for €275. As for leaving a tip, this one shocked me the most as in the original listing gratuities were listed as included in the price of the experience. See photos attached. On top of all that, the description that was listed on the Viator website was not correct. It stated the following: Experience the city like a local as you visit an organic grocery store with your host to pick up ingredients, then get hands-on practice mixing, cooking, and flipping the Dutch delicacy, before sitting down together to enjoy your included pancake lunch. Your hands-on pancake cooking class during which you will learn to make a savory and sweet Dutch pancake from scratch will last about an hour and a half. We did not experience an organic grocery store or pick up ingredients, we did not leave her house, we sat at the table listening to her tell us how she goes out to find locally supplied food. And as mentioned, there was no hands on pancake cooking class for the adults, the kids did help Fusina make the pancakes, but categorizing this as a cooking class is taking liberties. She did mention a few things about the area she lived in, but we didn’t experience the city as a local. The description also included the following: Gain insider insight, tips, and recommendations from your local host. The only tip we received was don’t drive a car around Amsterdam.
