Van Gogh tour - Fleur did such a wonderful explanation of Van Gogh and his life, his brother, his fellow artist and how he painted and how his painting changed through his short life. This semi private tour is well worth the money. And fleur added to it in a very special way.

Amazing introduction to Rembrandt and his sad life - Recently refreshed in 2023, this exhibition in Rembrandt’s home in Amsterdam was so interesting. We had hesitated to visit – but can only say we really enjoyed our 90 minutes there and were so glad we had come! It cost 20 euros but provided free lockers for bags and coats and then with an excellent audio tour led you through a succession of rooms from bottom to top explaining how they were used. (No coffee shop but plenty nearby. The house is full of 17th century paintings by Rembrandt’s students – all well explained, and there are even bits of broken pottery and pipes thrown into the cesspit by Rembrandt’s servants! The commentary explains how Rembrandt became such a sort after artist for portraits, but also how he became mired in debt and eventually had to leave the house in order to settle his bills. You really feel that you got to know him more through the visit, seeing his cubicles for tutoring students, his impressive entrance hall, his kitchen and his small ‘cupboard bed’. Dutch people used to sleep sitting up – fearing that if they lay down they might die! One room depicts a fascinating timeline of his life – and another displays the inventory of the house when it was sold, enabling modern curators to provide new examples of what had originally been there.

Van Gogh guided tour - Jo, the guide, was amazing. I don’t know much about art but it was an incredible and interesting trip through Van Gogh’s life and art. I am really glad I got the guide - there’s a lot to take in and it’s way more relaxing having someone who can explain it. I had a great time.
