Highlights
  • Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center - The Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center, established in 1993, spans 140 acres at the southern edge of Turnagain Arm and the entrance to Portage Valley. Its mission is to care for and rehabilitate injured and orphaned wildlife while promoting wildlife education and awareness. Animals that cannot be released back into the wild are provided refuge in the center’s spacious habitats. Visitors can safely observe and photograph some of Alaska’s largest land animals, including moose, bison, elk, deer, caribou, bears, muskox, small mammals, and birds of prey. During spring and summer, guests often witness the rehabilitation of orphaned baby animals of various species.
  • Beluga Point - Beluga Point is named after the beluga whales that can be seen from the shoreline, especially during the summer months (July to August). This area offers several natural attractions, making it a popular stop for visitors. It features wildlife, breathtaking views of Turnagain Arm—a narrow waterway surrounded by mountains—and opportunities for stunning photography and quiet reflection. Occasionally, visitors can witness a tidal bore, where a wall of water rushes in, reversing the river’s flow. Beluga Point is one of the prime spots to observe this natural phenomenon.
  • Turnagain Arm - Turnagain Arm is a breathtaking fjord-like waterway located southeast of Anchorage, Alaska, renowned for its dramatic tides, stunning mountain views, and abundant wildlife. As part of Cook Inlet, it boasts one of the world’s largest tidal ranges, creating a unique tidal bore where a wave rushes inland during high tide. Visitors often spot beluga whales, Dall sheep, and various bird species along its shores. The Seward Highway, which runs along Turnagain Arm, offers one of Alaska’s most scenic drives, with views of rugged mountains and vast tidal flats. Your guide will make several stops along the way for photos and interpretation.

Access stunning hidden spots with lovely tour guides! Highly recommended - The wildlife tour was absolutely stunning! No other people had signed up at the same time as us, making our experience highly personal. The tour was especially enjoyable and memorable because of our tour guide, Christina. She had great knowledge about the local landscape, answeres all our questions and made the experience extremely informative. Since it was just the two of us, she also customised the tour for us, taking us to hidden picturesque spots that are not part of the general route. We were not able to spot mooses on the highway, but saw a lot of wildlife in the center. The supporting text in the wildlife center was fun to read and helpful in forming an overall understanding. The highlight for us was the ghost forests at the center, anecdotes shared by the Christina, and some pristine viewpoints of the glaciers and water bodies that she especially added in the tour. This tour takes you to some parts of the landscape that are inaccessible by the glacier tours. While there might be a few overlaps with the glacier tours, the information and personal touch of the tour guides, helps set apart the experiences.

Wonderful day and a tour guide with a love for what she does - We had a great day! Christina, our driver and guide, is passionate about this area and packed so much into our time with her. We loved everything about this tour. We certainly appreciated the upgrade we received, which brought us to Portage Glacier and boat excursion. Christina had everything planned and timed perfectly, with stops for photos and even bakery goodies. She’s so proud to call this area her home.

Beware of the Mud Flats & Ghost Trees - This was a great tour. It was more than seeing animals. The ride to the Conservation Center along Turnagain Arm was both informative and fun. It was a 70 degree sunny day when we met our van with about 10 other people at the Eden Center which was about 3 blocks from our Hotel Captain Cook. Our guide/driver was terrific and tried to help a group of folks who were very confused about what tour they had booked. We made several stops and our guide told you as much or as little as you asked. When you go on this tour you will understand WHY going out on the mud flats can be fatal, that’s if the ghost trees don’t catch you first!

The trip of a lifetime!! 😍 - Review We had an amazing time on our Planet Earth Adventures tour! We booked the 11-day Alaska Discovery Tour, and it was phenomenal. Albert was our guide during the first half of the trip, and Phil was our guide for the second half. They were both so sweet, exceptionally knowledgeable, and also punctual and very reliable. They made our trip so stress-free, we didn’t have to think about any logistics or worry about how to get around - they took care of everything. That coupled with their expert knowledge of the region, we really feel like we got such an added-value by booking with Planet Earth. It was worth every penny, and we had the trip of a lifetime thanks to Albert and his team!

For the most part, and very enjoyable and educational excursion... - This was truly an amazing tour. The only reason I gave it 4 stars is because the entire rest of the lovely van was taken up by one large, extended family with three small children. They arrived unorganized, and delayed our departure due to their running back and forth for car seats, parking the car, etc. Our driver, Albert, was extremely patient, I must say. Throughout our trip, we could barely hear what Albert was saying and the interesting stories he was telling because of the crying babies and non-stop chatter behind us (even though we moved our seats so they could all sit together.) This was not Albert's fault - unfortunately for us they weren't as interested in hearing what he had to say as we were. The wildlife preserve tour was wonderful. The only thing I would suggest to Planet Earth Adventures is that if there is a large group taking up the rest of the van, it really is unfair to have two additional guests in the van - we definitely didn't enjoy our tour as much with all the talking and screaming children (and the one woman who on the van who doused herself in perfume, giving both my husband and myself a terrible headache until we could get out of the van...) Albert was great, and very knowledgeable - we would have loved the have been able to hear everything he was trying to tell us!!
