Highlights
  • Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center - The Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center is Southcentral Alaska’s top visitor attraction. This non-profit sanctuary is dedicated to preserving Alaska’s wildlife through conservation, research, education, and quality animal care. Visitors can immerse themselves in the region’s natural beauty and observe a diverse array of native wildlife up close, including bears, wolves, moose, and eagles, among others, in spacious 200-acre habitats designed to mimic their natural environment. It’s an unforgettable experience that fosters a deeper appreciation for Alaska’s wildlife.

  • Portage Glacier - Make a brief stop in Portage Valley to see several hanging glaciers that once extended the entire length of the 14-mile valley. Portage Glacier has receded approximately 2.5 miles, leaving behind a dead lake. The glacial remnants seen today include Explorer, Middle, Byron, Burns, and Shakespeare glaciers. While still massive, these glaciers are smaller reminders of the immense ice sheets that once covered this landscape. Next, take a walk through the rainforest, then enjoy your ride back to Chugach State Park and marvel at the stunning views of Turnagain Arm.

  • Chugach State Park - At Beluga Point, visitors can enjoy breathtaking views of Turnagain Arm with its sweeping coastal scenery and rugged cliffs. In spring and summer, you might catch glimpses of beluga whales swimming in the waters. Turnagain Arm offers opportunities for wildlife viewing, including beluga whales, Dall sheep, bald eagles, and sometimes bears, as well as scenic vistas of the Chugach Mountains and the unique phenomenon of bore tides.

  • Turnagain Arm Trail, Northern Trailhead - The scenic drive to the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center and back to Anchorage takes 2 hours and 30 minutes round trip.

First time on Turnagain Arm - Kim was not only knowledgeable and prompt, but she was also very nice and fun. She showed much patience with a child and since we had extra time, she took us to the chocolate factory. Wildlife conservation center was pretty crowded. The day we went, but we were still able to see some animals in action. On the turn arm, we did not view as many wild creatures as we had hoped but did spy a moose crossing a river, Van was very clean and comfortable. would definitely recommend white raven company.

A great way to see some real Alaska with a local. - We were looking for a way to get out of the city and experience a little of real Alaska. I had never heard of White Raven Tours but asked advice from a friendly-seeming man near the log cabin. He was more than willing to give me as much information as I wanted. I then asked what he does and he described this tour and it sounded like a great way to accomplish our goal. We were more than happy that we chose to go with Dan. He is a local businessman who is in his first year of operating this business. His operation seems very professional and the tour was better than we had hoped. We really enjoyed his knowledge of the area and his willingness to share that information that made the tour even more interesting. Among other things, he knew exactly where to look for Dall Sheep and Moose and both cooperated today. He also knew where we were likely to see swans and Cygnets and they cooperated as well. Both of us would enthusiastically recommend this tour and if we are ever in the area again would try to book another White Raven tour.

Fun tour - Had a fun tour with Dan, who was knowledgeable and helpful. This was a great option since I didn’t have a car; they pick you up at your hotel. The drive out toward Whittier has beautiful views, including at the quick stops to see glaciers and glacier lakes. The animal conservation center is a great way to see animals up close and safely. We even got to stop at the chocolate factory.
