Arrival and a Warm Welcome

As an advocate for sustainable tourism, I often find myself drawn to activities that allow me to connect with nature while respecting the environment. The Beach and Dune Tour in Anna Bay was one such adventure that promised a unique blend of excitement and eco-conscious exploration. However, my journey to the dunes was not without its challenges.

The drive from Tanilba Bay to Anna Bay was fraught with roadworks, causing unexpected delays. My sister and I arrived late, with her reaching the meeting point just a minute behind schedule and myself trailing by seven minutes due to a mix-up with the parking arrangements. The car park, shared with a local restaurant and beachgoers, added to the confusion. By the time we reached the designated spot, the 4WD safari had already departed.

In what could have been a disappointing start, Frank, one of the tour guides, turned the situation around. His exceptional customer service was a testament to the tour’s commitment to ensuring a memorable experience for all. Frank personally drove us to catch up with the group, sharing insightful information about the local ecosystem along the way. His dedication and knowledge set the tone for the adventure that lay ahead.

Exploring the Stockton Sand Dunes

Once reunited with the group, we embarked on a journey through the Stockton Sand Dunes, the largest moving coastal sand mass in the Southern Hemisphere. The sheer scale and beauty of the dunes were awe-inspiring, a reminder of nature’s grandeur and the importance of preserving such landscapes.

Our guide, whose name I believe was George, provided a fascinating commentary on the history and ecology of the dunes. His passion for the environment was infectious, and I found myself deeply engaged in learning about the delicate balance that sustains this unique ecosystem. From the native flora and fauna to the geological processes that shape the dunes, every detail was a reminder of the intricate web of life that we must strive to protect.

The tour also included a hands-on experience with the local pipis, small shellfish that play a crucial role in the coastal ecosystem. Learning how to find and handle them responsibly was a delightful addition to the tour, reinforcing the importance of sustainable interaction with nature.
