Highlights

Perge Ancient City - Perge, a long-established city in the Pamphylia region, is situated 18 km east of Antalya and 2 km north of Aksu village. The archaeological site of Perge has been systematically excavated by Istanbul University since 1946. Perge is significant in terms of city planning during the late classical, Hellenistic, and Roman Empire periods. The distinctive layout of the Acropolis during the late classical period was systematically extended to the lower city.

Aspendos Ruins - The theatre was constructed in the 2nd century AD, during the reign of the Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius (161-180 AD), based on a design by Zeno, a Greek architect born in Aspendos. Greek and Latin inscriptions above the entrances to the skene building indicate that two brothers, Curtius Crispinus and Curtius Auspicatus, dedicated this theatre “to the gods of this country and to the imperial house.” Although the theatre was built during the Roman period, it exhibits many features typical of Greek theatres. The auditorium is partially supported by a hillside and has a horseshoe shape, a characteristic of Greek design. However, in line with Roman standards, the theatre is isolated from the outside world by the skene building, and the barrel-vaulted substructure is a typical Roman feature.

Side Antik Kenti - Side can be reached by turning south 3 km before Manavgat on the Antalya-Alanya highway. The exact date of its founding is unknown. In the language of Anatolia, “Side” means pomegranate. Inscriptions suggest that Side dates back to the Hittite period. The city was built on a peninsula and was a Hellenistic and Roman town, protected by city and sea walls. Notable features include the city gates and walls, as well as numerous remains of aqueducts that brought water from the Taurus Mountains and surrounding areas. The old baths have been restored and converted into a museum, displaying statues and art treasures found in Side. One of its most important buildings is its theatre, which could accommodate 15,000 spectators. Unlike other ancient theatres in the region, this Roman theatre was not built against a hillside. Side also features colonnaded streets, a triumphal arch, a harbour, baths, fountains, cisterns, aqueducts, temples, and an agora.
