Super fun...but hard - Pros: 1) We got to see a lot of Madagascar through this tour. Rainforests, the beach, dry deciduous forest, and the desert. 2) Our guide, Njato, and our driver, Fetra, were wonderful. Njato was so knowledgeable and a fun person to spend two weeks with. Fetra was an expert on the roads. We couldn't have asked for a better guide or driver. 3) We got to do a wide variety of activities - tough hikes, easier walks, night walks, a day at the beach, interacting with lemurs, seeing lemurs completely in the wild, boat rides, and short stops in small villages on our drives. Cons: 1. Poor roads make getting around Madagascar take much longer than it would back home (in the USA) - expect very long driving days with limited bathrooms. We had 2 days of 12+ hours in the car, plus a couple 6-8 hour driving days. Our driver had to maneuver through many giant potholes and we breathed in other cars' exhaust/road dirt through the open windows the whole time, making us feel a bit nauseous. 2) The itinerary didn't state that we had to book our own flights within Madagascar. Luckily I reached out a week prior to leaving to confirm some details and it came up that we should have booked two domestic flights. We booked them last minute, though one flight wasn't available on the day the itinerary indicated. The tour company shifted things around so we could still take the tour but it was hectic while they worked to resolve it and we missed an activity or two in the reshuffle. It should have been made very clear that we needed to book our own flights AND that those flights are only available on certain days of the week. 3) We did night walks but weren't supplied with flashlights. The tour information should have suggested bringing flashlights/headlamps from home. 4) About half of the hotels we stayed at were different from what was listed in the itinerary. Most hotels were fine (some were excellent), but just know that you may not be staying where you think you'll be staying. 5) Bring your own toilet paper! FYI: We are in our early 40's and fairly fit and we found this to be a challenging trip. Some hikes were long and through thick rainforest or hot desert - be aware that this is an active trip (bring snacks)! Some hotels also have open shutters so nature can get in. Cute geckos, but also spiders and cockroaches. Not all hotels are luxurious and 5-star. Overall we are happy we went, but if you're not fit or prefer to travel in style, this is not for you.
