ITINERARY FOR THE WEEKEND OF DECEMBER 21 - DECEMBER 22, 2024

Pre-Christmas Weekend in Anuradhapura: A Journey Through Time and Spirituality

Experience a pre-Christmas weekend in Anuradhapura, where ancient ruins and spiritual sites await under a mix of clear skies and potential rain. Discover the city’s rich history and cultural significance, making it a perfect getaway for those seeking mindfulness and tradition.

Discovering Anuradhapura’s Timeless Heritage

As the sun rises over Anuradhapura on December 21st, the city awakens to a day filled with historical exploration and cultural immersion. The morning’s overcast skies and moderate temperatures provide the perfect backdrop for a journey through the ancient ruins of this sacred city. Begin your day with the Anuradhapura Historical Tour, available from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM, where you’ll walk through the remnants of a civilization that once thrived over a millennium ago.

The tour takes you to the awe-inspiring Jetavanarama, a towering structure that once stood as one of the tallest buildings in the ancient world. As you wander through the extensive ruins of the Abhayagiri Monastery, you’ll feel the echoes of history beneath your feet. The Sri Maha Bodhi, a sacred fig tree believed to be the oldest human-planted tree in the world, offers a serene spot for reflection and meditation.

Reviewed at 2018-10-03: A long but worthwhile day - We were warned it was a long drive from Colombo to Anuradhapura and an early start was needed, so we were in two minds whether to take this tour. But we are glad we did. Our driver was on time, the car was comfortable and we could catch up on sleep for some of the journey. The site is huge and we picked up a local guide and toured it by car, getting out at the main sites to look at them. The monumental stupas are impressive and the setting is beautiful. It was particularly interesting to see how the site is still an active place of worship with tourists in the minority.

As the morning clouds give way to clearer skies, the temperature rises, making it an ideal time to explore the open-air sites. Remember to carry sunscreen and an umbrella, as the afternoon brings a high chance of rain.

Embracing the Spiritual Essence

The afternoon of December 21st invites you to delve deeper into the spiritual heart of Anuradhapura. Visit the Mirisawetiya Stupa, a sacred Buddhist site constructed by King Dutugemunu in the 3rd century BC. Surrounded by tranquil lotus ponds, this site exudes a serene ambiance, perfect for introspection and connection with the teachings of Buddhism.

Continue your spiritual journey at the Ruwanwelisaya, the third largest stupa in Sri Lanka, believed to enshrine a considerable amount of Buddha’s relics. The stupa’s imposing structure and cultural significance make it a must-visit destination for those exploring Sri Lanka’s cultural treasures.

As the afternoon progresses, the skies may clear up, offering a pleasant evening for a stroll or dining outdoors. The temperature drops to a more comfortable level, making it an ideal time to visit the Thuparama Vihara, the oldest stupa in Sri Lanka, believed to enshrine the collar bone relic of Buddha.

A Day of Nature and Reflection

On December 22nd, the day begins with clear skies and mild temperatures, perfect for a morning stroll or outdoor breakfast. Embrace the tranquility of the Wilpattu National Park and Anuradhapura Ruins, a two-day excursion that offers a unique blend of wildlife and history.

Wilpattu National Park, known for its population of leopards and fascinating birdlife, provides an exciting start to your day. The park’s unique feature, the “Willus” - natural, sand-rimmed water basins, adds to the allure of this natural wonder.

As the day progresses, return to Anuradhapura to explore the Mihintale, the birthplace of Buddhism in Sri Lanka. Ascend the grand staircase adorned with intricate carvings to reach the summit, where the impressive Mahaseya Stupa awaits. This sacred site offers glimpses into ancient Buddhist practices and the cultural heritage of Sri Lanka.

As the evening approaches, the skies clear once more, offering a beautiful end to your pre-Christmas weekend in Anuradhapura. Whether you’re dining al fresco or taking a leisurely evening walk, the city’s rich history and spiritual essence leave a lasting impression, inviting you to return and explore even more of its timeless treasures.
