Embracing the Wild: Wilpattu National Park
As the pre-holiday season approaches, there’s no better time to immerse yourself in the natural wonders of Anuradhapura. Begin your adventure with a visit to the Wilpattu National Park Day Excursion on November 30th. This day excursion offers a unique opportunity to explore one of Sri Lanka’s most renowned wildlife sanctuaries. Known for its elusive leopards and diverse wildlife, Wilpattu National Park is a haven for nature enthusiasts. The park’s unique feature, the ‘Willus’ or natural water basins, adds to its charm, creating a picturesque landscape that captivates every visitor.
The weather forecast for the day suggests a partly cloudy sky with a significant chance of rain, especially in the morning. This might seem daunting, but the rain enhances the lush greenery and brings out the vibrant colors of the park’s flora and fauna. The moderate temperatures, with highs of 84.5°F, make it a comfortable day for exploration. Remember to pack an umbrella and wear comfortable clothing to fully enjoy this experience.
A recent review from a visitor highlights the thrill of encountering the park’s wildlife:
Brilliant but rough for the elderly - I went from Negombo to the park privately. When the final turn off is found there is a very good restaurant and parking place for private vehicles. You then walk across the road to hire a four-wheel high-seated safari wagon. 7k further on along the side road is the entrance to the park. I am 82 and judged the amount of rough road work would be too much for me for three hours. My traveling companion went on and thought it was an afternoon trip in 90 degrees, once off-road and in the forested area, the heat was dissipated. He and another companion confirmed it would have been too much for this old codger. But they enjoyed the trip and found it good value for money with a wide range of wildlife seen, including an ambush by skilled monkeys who cleared the vehicles of anything not tied down. But not aggressive, just recycling, the most cunning being the youngers. Being an afternoon trip no leopard, or elephant was seen, they are both common and numerous. Allow 3 hours for trip out and back: 6 in total, plus the safari. (Reviewed at: 2019-03-28)
Sacred Spaces: Anuradhapura’s Historical Marvels
On December 1st, as the skies clear and the sun peeks through the clouds, delve into the rich history of Anuradhapura. This ancient city, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a treasure trove of cultural and historical landmarks. Start your day with a visit to the Wilpattu and Anuradhapura Tour, which offers a comprehensive exploration of the city’s sacred sites.
Begin your journey at the Jetavanaramaya, a towering stupa that stands as a testament to ancient engineering and Buddhist devotion. Built by King Mahasena in the 3rd century AD, this colossal structure is one of the world’s tallest monuments of its time. As you walk around its base, feel the spiritual energy that has drawn pilgrims for centuries.
Next, visit the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi, a sacred fig tree believed to be a descendant of the Bodhi tree under which Siddhartha Gautama attained enlightenment. This revered site is surrounded by a protective golden fence and draws visitors seeking solace and blessings. The tranquility of the surroundings offers a moment of reflection and connection with the island’s spiritual heritage.
Ascending Mihintale: The Birthplace of Buddhism in Sri Lanka
Conclude your pre-holiday adventure with a visit to Mihintale, the birthplace of Buddhism in Sri Lanka. This significant landmark is where King Devanampiyatissa met Monk Mahinda, marking the introduction of Buddhism to the island. The Wilpattu and Anuradhapura Tour includes a visit to this sacred site, allowing you to walk in the footsteps of history.
Climb the Mihintale Rock and explore the monastic ruins at the foot of the mountain. The panoramic views from the top are breathtaking, offering a serene backdrop for contemplation and appreciation of the island’s rich cultural tapestry. As you ascend, imagine the ancient monks who once walked these paths, spreading the teachings of Buddhism across the land.
The weather on this day is expected to be warm and humid, with a chance of storms. However, the gusty winds and partly cloudy skies provide a refreshing atmosphere for your exploration. As the day ends with clear skies, take a moment to watch the sunset over the ancient city, a perfect conclusion to your journey through Anuradhapura’s natural and historical wonders.
