A Twilight Adventure Begins

As the sun began its descent over the horizon, painting the sky with hues of orange and pink, I found myself at the entrance of Wildlife Wonders’ Sanctuary in Apollo Bay. The anticipation of the Dusk Discovery Tour was palpable among the small group of ten, each of us eager to witness the magic of the Otways habitat at dusk. The tour’s timing was perfect, as dusk is when the sanctuary’s residents are most active, transitioning between day and night.

Encounters with the Wild

The first part of our tour was dedicated to spotting koalas, and we were not disappointed. Nestled high in the eucalyptus trees, these iconic creatures seemed unfazed by our presence, their serene demeanor a testament to the sanctuary’s respectful approach to wildlife observation. But as the sun dipped below the horizon, the real magic began.

Emerging from the shadows, potoroos and bandicoots appeared, their playful antics a delight to behold. It was as if we were invisible, mere observers in their world. The emus, however, had a different plan. Engaging in a game of hide-and-seek, they would vanish only to reappear moments later, their curious eyes fixed on us. This playful interaction was a reminder of the unique personalities each species possesses.

As we moved from the bush to the grassland, the diversity of the sanctuary’s inhabitants became even more apparent. Kangaroos, wallabies, and pademelons grazed peacefully, their silhouettes framed by the fading light. The emus, ever the entertainers, made another appearance, much to our amusement.
