Unveiling the Roman Legacy of Aquileia: A Family Adventure
Our family’s journey to Aquileia was driven by a desire to explore its rich Roman heritage. Join us as we uncover the stories and history that make this UNESCO World Heritage Site a must-visit for families.
Discovering the Ancient Roman Heart of Aquileia
Our family’s European adventures have taken us to many historical sites, but Aquileia, with its rich Roman heritage, offered a unique blend of history and culture that captivated us all. As a museum curator, I am always on the lookout for places that can engage both adults and children, and Aquileia did not disappoint.
Our journey began at the Area Archeologica di Aquileia - Foro Romano, where the remnants of the Roman Forum stood as a testament to the grandeur of the past. Walking through the ancient ruins, I could almost hear the bustling sounds of a once-thriving Roman city. The kids were fascinated by the stories of emperors and citizens who once walked these very paths. The forum, with its columns and stone pavements, provided a tangible connection to history that even our youngest could appreciate.
The next stop was the Il Porto sul Natissa, the ancient river port. Here, we learned about the vital role this port played in trade and commerce during the Roman Empire. The children were particularly intrigued by the idea of ships laden with goods from distant lands docking at this very site. It was a perfect opportunity to discuss the importance of trade in ancient times and how it shaped the world we know today.
The Magnificent Mosaics of Basilica di Aquileia
No visit to Aquileia would be complete without exploring the Basilica di Aquileia. As we entered the basilica, the sheer size and beauty of the mosaic floor took our breath away. The mosaic, which is the largest of its kind in the Christian West, is a stunning work of art that tells stories of faith and history through its intricate designs.
The basilica’s three naves, with the magnificent mosaic between the two side naves, were a highlight of our visit. The children were mesmerized by the vibrant colors and detailed patterns, and it was a joy to see them engage with history in such a direct way. We spent a considerable amount of time here, each of us finding our own favorite scenes within the mosaic.
The basilica also offered a moment of reflection and peace. Its solemn atmosphere provided a stark contrast to the bustling life of the ancient city outside. It was a reminder of the spiritual and cultural significance of Aquileia throughout history.
A Journey Through Time at the National Archaeological Museum
After a delightful lunch break, we headed to the Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Aquileia. This museum is a treasure trove of artifacts that paint a vivid picture of life in ancient Aquileia. From intricate jewelry to everyday household items, each exhibit told a story of the people who once called this place home.
The museum’s interactive displays were a hit with the kids, allowing them to engage with history in a hands-on way. As a curator, I appreciated the effort put into making the exhibits accessible and educational for visitors of all ages. It was a perfect blend of learning and fun, and it sparked many interesting conversations with our children about the past.
Our visit to Aquileia was a journey through time, offering insights into the lives of the ancient Romans and the enduring legacy of their culture. It was a reminder of the importance of preserving our history and sharing it with future generations.
