Exploring Ethiopia’s Hidden Gems: A Day at Debre Libanos and Beyond

Eager to explore Ethiopia’s rich history and natural beauty, I embarked on a day trip to Debre Libanos Monastery and the Portuguese Bridge. The experience was a captivating blend of culture, nature, and adventure.

A Journey Through Time: Debre Libanos Monastery

The morning air was crisp as I departed Addis Ababa, the city slowly waking up to the rhythm of a new day. The drive northward was a journey through time itself, as the landscape transformed from urban sprawl to the lush, green embrace of Mount Entoto’s forests. The anticipation of visiting the Debre Libanos Monastery, a site steeped in history and spirituality, was palpable. Founded in the 13th century by Saint Tekle Haymanot, the monastery is a testament to Ethiopia’s rich religious heritage.

Upon arrival, the monastery’s serene atmosphere enveloped me. The ancient walls seemed to whisper stories of devotion and resilience. Inside, the museum housed an impressive collection of ancient bibles and religious artifacts, each piece a window into the past. The highlight, however, was the tomb of Saint Tekle Haymanot, a revered figure whose legacy continues to inspire. As I wandered through the sacred halls, I felt a profound connection to the generations of pilgrims who had walked these paths before me.

The short hike to the cave, once a place of prayer for the saint, offered a moment of reflection. The natural beauty surrounding the monastery was a reminder of the delicate balance between human history and the natural world—a theme that resonates deeply with my passion for sustainable travel.

Crossing the Portuguese Bridge: A Dance with Nature

Leaving the monastery, the journey continued to the Portuguese Bridge, a marvel of ancient engineering that spans the Blue Nile Gorge. The bridge, with its rugged stone arches, stood as a silent witness to centuries of history. As I crossed, the breathtaking views of the gorge unfolded before me, a tapestry of vibrant greens and deep blues that seemed to stretch into infinity.

It was here, amidst the dramatic landscapes, that I encountered the gelada baboons. These endemic creatures, with their striking manes and expressive faces, were a sight to behold. Observing them in their natural habitat was a privilege, a reminder of the incredible biodiversity that Ethiopia harbors. The baboons moved with a grace that belied their size, their social interactions a fascinating display of community and hierarchy.

Birdsong filled the air, adding a melodic backdrop to the scene. The avian diversity was astounding, each species a unique thread in the rich tapestry of life that thrives in this region. As a wildlife photographer, moments like these are the essence of my work—capturing the beauty of nature while advocating for its preservation.

Reflections on a Day Well Spent

As the sun began its descent, casting a golden glow over the landscape, I found myself reflecting on the day’s journey. The visit to Debre Libanos and the Portuguese Bridge had been more than just a sightseeing tour; it was an exploration of Ethiopia’s soul. The blend of history, culture, and nature had left an indelible mark on my heart.

The coordination by Gashaw, our guide, was impeccable, ensuring that every moment was seamless and enriching. His knowledge and passion for his country’s heritage were evident, adding depth to the experience. It’s no wonder that the reviewer expressed a desire to return with family—Ethiopia’s allure is undeniable.

This adventure was a reminder of the importance of sustainable travel. By respecting and preserving these sites, we ensure that future generations can experience the same wonder and awe. As I made my way back to Addis Ababa, I carried with me not just photographs, but memories of a journey that celebrated the beauty and resilience of Ethiopia.
