Arequipa - Today, we head to Chachani mountain, a vast volcanic complex located 55 km northwest of Arequipa city. It features four peaks, with the summit reaching 6,075 meters. This thrilling expedition begins almost every day at midnight, picking you up from your hotel to head northwest along the Cabrerías unpaved road. The journey takes about 3 hours, gradually ascending through winding terrain and passing through the significant “Salinas and Aguada Blanca” National Reserve. Around 3:00 am, we reach the starting point, commonly known as El Collado (5,000 m / 16,500 ft). Once there, we prepare ourselves, and if the season requires, we provide equipment like ice axes and crampons. Our mountain guide will give instructions to ensure a smooth climb. Before we set off, we enjoy a mountain breakfast, including coca tea.

Salinas y Aguada Blanca National Reserve - The hike begins easily, as the terrain is not steep. However, take it slow; we will be hiking over 5,000 m on volcanic terrain, which has its challenges. Let the mountain guide set the pace to maintain an effective progress and a steady heart rate. Chachani’s volcanic environment is unique, surrounded by endemic vegetation, trails covered with ash, sand, and large volcanic rocks from eruptions thousands and millions of years ago. The first part of the hike is about 3.5 km (1.5 - 2 hours) to reach the fox camp, where we rest, rehydrate, and take in the surroundings. The darkness reveals an amazing sky, and climbers often feel privileged to see the Milky Way and constellations so clearly.

Chachani Volcano - We then continue the second part of the climb, a 6 to 7-hour ascent to the top. We follow a zigzag trail that seems endless but is achievable. We take short breaks at specific points, looking back to see how far we’ve come, using it as motivation. It’s better to maintain a slow and steady pace than a fast and erratic one. At around 5,950 m, we cross a ridge into the extinct crater for the final stop before reaching the summit. After a brief rest, we conquer the summit of Chachani (6,075 meters). This is the perfect place to release your emotions, celebrate with your group, and enjoy the freedom and satisfaction of the moment. Take your time to soak in the 360° panoramic view of the unique landscape, surrounded by volcanoes, valleys, lagoons, and the distant Arequipa city. If visibility is good, you might even see the Pacific Ocean on the horizon.

Salinas y Aguada Blanca National Reserve - After celebrating, we head back to the fox camp, which takes about 1.5 hours. We rest, rehydrate, and eat to regain energy. Then, at the designated time, we return to the vehicle, which takes another 1.5 hours, followed by a 2.5-hour journey back to Arequipa city, concluding this great expedition at your hotel.
