Exploring the Scented Wonders of North Gran Canaria with Kids
As a family travel writer, I was drawn to the allure of North Gran Canaria’s rich scents and flavors. Join me as I explore the charming towns and lush landscapes of this beautiful region with my kids.
Discovering Arucas: A Family-Friendly Adventure
Our journey began in the charming town of Arucas, a place that immediately captured our hearts with its vast banana plantations and the historic allure of sugar cane, once known as “white gold.” As we strolled through the old town, the kids were fascinated by the neo-Gothic church of San Juan Bautista. Its towering spires and intricate architecture provided a perfect backdrop for some family photos. The town’s history and culture were palpable, and it was a great opportunity to teach the kids about the island’s past.
Arucas is a wonderful place for families to explore. The streets are safe and welcoming, and the locals are friendly and eager to share their stories. We took our time wandering through the town, stopping to enjoy the local shops and cafes. The kids loved trying the local pastries, and I appreciated the chance to relax and soak in the atmosphere. It’s a place where history comes alive, and I highly recommend it for families looking to combine education with fun.
The Enchanting Village of Firgas
Next on our itinerary was Firgas, a village that truly lives up to its reputation as the “municipality of water.” The highlight for us was the 30-meter waterfall fountain that cascades down one of the main streets. The kids were mesmerized by the sight and sound of the water, and it was a perfect spot for a family picnic. We spent a leisurely afternoon exploring the village, enjoying the lush greenery and the cool, refreshing air.
Firgas is a gem for families. The village is small enough to explore on foot, and there are plenty of spots to sit and enjoy the scenery. The kids had a blast playing near the fountain, and I loved the opportunity to teach them about the importance of water in the region’s history and culture. It’s a place that invites you to slow down and appreciate the simple pleasures of life.
A Taste of Agaete and Puerto de las Nieves
Our final destinations were Agaete and Puerto de las Nieves, where the agricultural richness of the area was on full display. The kids were thrilled to see the banana, potato, and vegetable crops, and we all enjoyed the guided visit to the La Laja estate. The coffee tasting was a highlight, although I must admit it felt a bit like a sales event. Nevertheless, the experience of seeing the only coffee producers on the island was fascinating.
In Agaete, the explosion of aromas, flavors, and colors was a feast for the senses. The kids loved the fruit trees and vineyards, and it was a great opportunity to teach them about the different crops grown in the region. Our day ended in Puerto de las Nieves, a picturesque fishing village where we enjoyed a leisurely lunch by the sea. The kids played on the beach, and I took a moment to reflect on the day’s adventures.
Overall, the Coffee & Wine Tour was a delightful experience for the whole family. While there were a few moments that felt more commercial than educational, the beauty and charm of the region more than made up for it. It’s a trip that offers something for everyone, and I highly recommend it to families looking to explore the scents and flavors of North Gran Canaria.
