Lake Natron, nestled at the foot of the mountain, is reported to be the solitary breeding ground for the threatened Lesser Flamingoes that inhabit the Great Rift Valley. It’s also considered to be the most critical breeding location for these birds globally, being home to a huge 75% of the world’s Lesser Flamingoes.
Positioned at the valley’s lowest point in East Africa, this alkaline lagoon is relatively shallow, rarely exceeding three meters deep, and its size fluctuates based on the water levels. The mud in the lake can heat to over 40 degrees Celsius, as evaporation results in heightened alkalinity. This alkaline condition of the lake wards off any predators that dare to approach the flamingo nests.
