Machame Camp (3010m) To Shira Camp (3845M)

The descent to Barranco Camp goes through the unique and beautiful Senecio Forest to an altitude of 13,000 ft. Although the day starts and ends at the same elevation, the time spent at higher altitude aids acclimatization.

Barranco Camp (3960m) To Barafu Camp (4640m)
Kilimanjaro National Park - The day begins with a descent into the Great Barranco, a vast ravine. The trail then ascends steeply up the Great Barranco Wall, leading to the southeastern slopes of Kibo. This climb over rock is not technical but is long and tiring. Passing beneath the Heim and Kersten glaciers, the trail heads towards the Karanga valley, the last stop for fresh water before the summit. The terrain becomes scree as the trail continues through arid and desolate land towards Barafu Camp.

Barafu Camp (4640m) To Uhuru Peak (5895m) & Down To Millennium Camp (3790m)
Kilimanjaro National Park - The summit push begins very early in the morning (around midnight). This is the most mentally and physically challenging part of the trek. The wind and cold at this elevation and time can be extreme. The ascent is done in darkness for several hours with frequent, short breaks. Near Stella Point (18,900 ft), trekkers are rewarded with a magnificent sunrise over Mawenzi Peak. Finally, the trail reaches Uhuru Peak, the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the African continent.
The descent from the summit continues straight down to the Mweka Hut campsite, with a stop at Barafu for lunch. The trail is rocky and can be hard on the knees; trekking poles are helpful. Mweka Camp is located in the upper forest, where mist or rain is common in the late afternoon. In the evening, trekkers enjoy their last dinner on the mountain and a well-deserved sleep.
Trek Millennium Camp (3790m) To Mweka Gate (1630m)
Kilimanjaro National Park - On the final day, the descent continues to Mweka Gate to collect summit certificates. At lower elevations, the trail can be wet and muddy. From the gate, the journey continues for another hour to Mweka Village, where a vehicle will meet trekkers to drive them back to Moshi Town.
