Highlights

Machame Gate (1490m) – Machame Camp (2980m)

Kilimanjaro National Park - After an early breakfast at your hotel, you will be picked up from Arusha (1400m) and driven to Machame Village. In the village, you can buy mineral water and will receive a packed lunch. From the village, depending on the road conditions, you will either continue to drive from the village to the Machame gate, but if not, the muddy 3 km walk will take about 1 hour to complete. After registering at the gate office, you start your ascent and enter the rain forest almost immediately. There is a strong possibility of rain in the forest, which will transform the trail into a very soggy, muddy and slippery experience. You will have a welcome lunch stop about halfway and will reach the Machame camping area in the late afternoon. In the evening the porters will boil drinking and washing water and the cook will prepare dinner before you retire to your tent for the night.

Machame camp (2980m) – Shira camp (3840m)

Kilimanjaro National Park - Hiking time: 6h Distance: Approximately 9 km Habitat: Moorland You rise early at Machame camp and after breakfast you climb an hour or so to the top of the forest and then for 2 hours at a gentler gradient through the moorland zone. After a short lunch and rest, you continue up a rocky ridge onto the Shira plateau. By now you will be able to see in an easterly direction, the Western Breach with its stunning glaciers. You are now due west of Kibo and after a short hike, you will reach the Shira campsite at 3 840m. The porters will boil drinking and washing water, before serving dinner. The night at this exposed camp will even be colder than the previous night, with temperatures dropping to well below freezing.

Shira (at 3840m) to Lava Tower (at 4630m) to Barranco camp (at 3950m)

Kilimanjaro National Park - The route now turns east into a semi-desert and rocky landscape surrounding Lava Tower, where you reach an altitude of 4630m after about a 5 hours walk. Lunch is served in a designated area before ascending the rocky scree path to Lava Tower (4630m). This is definitely the toughest day so far. It is normally around this point, where for the first time, some climbers will start to feel symptoms of breathlessness, irritability and headaches. After lunch you descent again by almost 680m to the Barranco camping area and after reaching the high altitude of 4600m at Lava Tower, the true acclimatisation benefit of this day becomes clear. This descent to Barranco camp takes about 2 hours and offers great opportunities to take some beautiful photographs of the Western Breach and Breach Wall. The camp is situated in a valley below the Breach and Great Barranco Wall, which should provide you with a memorable sunset while you wait for the preparation of your dinner.

Barranco Camp (3950m) – Karanga Camp (3950m)

Kilimanjaro National Park - Hiking time: 4-5 hours Distance: Approximately 5 kilometers Habitat: Alpine desert After an early morning breakfast, it is now time to conquer the Great Barranco Wall! Although it may look intimating at first glance, hikers state that this Class 2 hike is usually much easier than they anticipated. At the top of the Wall, you will have a view of Heim Glacier and will be above the clouds. The trail then winds up and down in the Karanga Valley. This is an ideal hiking day for acclimatization.

Karanga Camp (3959m) – Barafu Hut (4600m)

Kilimanjaro National Park - Hiking time: 2-3 hours Distance: Approximately 4 kilometers Habitat: Alpine desert Following breakfast, you will leave Karanga Camp (3959m). The trail intersects with the Mweka Route, which is the trail used to descend on the final two days. As you continue hiking for an hour, you will reach Barafu Hut. This is the last water stop for the porters because there is no accessible water at Barafu Camp (4550m). The word “barafu” in Swahili means “ice” and this camp is located on a rocky, exposed ridge. Tents will be exposed to wind and rocks so it is important for hikers to familiarize themselves with the campsite before dark. An early dinner will be served so hikers can rest before attempting the summit the same night. Your guide will brief you in detail on how to prepare for summit night. Get to sleep by 19:00!

(Summit attempt) Barafu camp (4550m) – Uhuru Peak (5895m) – Mweka (3100m)

Kilimanjaro National Park - You will rise around 23h30, and after some tea and biscuits you shuffle off into the night. You will head in a north-westerly direction and ascend through heavy scree towards Stella Point on the crater rim. For many climbers, this 6-hour walk to Stella point is mentally and physically the most challenging on the route. At Stella Point (5685m) you will stop for a short rest and will be rewarded with the most magnificent sunrise you are ever likely to see (weather permitting). From Stella Point you will normally encounter snow all the way on your 2-hour ascent to Uhuru Peak. The time you will spend on the summit will depend on the weather conditions. Do not stop here for too long, as it will be extremely difficult to start again due to cold and fatigue. Enjoy your accomplishment and a day to remember for the rest of your life. The walk back to Barafu from the summit takes about 3 hours. Here you will have a well-earned but short rest and collect the rest of your gear.

Mweka camp (3100m) – Mweka Gate (1980m)

Kilimanjaro National Park - Hiking time: 3h Distance: Approximately 15 km Habitat: Forest Following a well-deserved breakfast, your staff will have a big celebration full of dancing and singing. It is here on the mountain that you will present your tips to the guide, assistant guides, chef(s), and porters. After celebrating, you will descend for three hours back to Mweka Gate. The National Park requires all hikers to sign their names to receive certificates of completion. Hikers who reached Stella Point (5685m) receive green certificates and hikers who reached Uhuru Peak (5895m) receive gold certificates. After receiving certificates, hikers will descend into the Mweka village for 1 hour (3 kilometres). You will be served a hot lunch then you will drive back to Arusha for long overdue showers and more celebrations. Afterwards, drop off to the hotel in Arusha/Moshi

Additional Information

The Machame route, also known as the ‘Whiskey’ route, is the most popular route on Kilimanjaro. Machame’s draw is in its scenic beauty. However, the trail is considered difficult, steep and challenging, particularly due to its shorter itinerary. Therefore this route is better suited for more adventurous folks or those with some high altitude, hiking or backpacking experience.

Top Kilimanjaro hiking Trip - I have nothing but good things to say about our Kili climb tour. From the beginning, the owner of the company we chose (Serengeti African Tours) for our climb, Lucas, responded promptly to our emails and any questions (there were many). Our guide Gasto was just the best and was very supportive, I don't know if I would have made it to the summit without him by my side. The food was fantastic, all the other hikers were jealous of our meals. The whole team was just amazing. I don't often write reviews, if ever. But these guys deserve a shout out! Greetings

Best team to go on top of Africa - It's a lifetime experience to do Kili and to succeed thanks to a team that help us fulfilling this. Thanks to Lucas for making it so easy for us, for both, Kilimanjaro and Safaris. Thanks also to Gasto (best guide ever) and all his team that were so kind and so generous, always the smile on their faces. Lemosho route is wonderful, each day is different with a lot of sceneries and views. We recommend them 1000%

7 Day Machame Route to Mount Kilimanjaro - I am very excited to say that I reached the summit on Mount Kilimanjaro with Serengeti African tours From the very beginning, Lucas was quick to answer all of my questions and had very awesome communication! I am in Tanzania volunteering at an orphanage and staying at a home stay in Arusha, and the very friendly Mr. God came and picked me up to take me to my hotel in Moshi. Gasto met me there and made sure I had all of the equipment and gear I needed to get me through the trek. The guide and porters were amazing! They made delicious meals and accommodated my vegetarian diet perfectly! They made sure everyone in my group was doing well and kept us happy with their kindness and great attitudes! Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro was the hardest thing I have ever done in my life, but thanks to Serengeti African tours, I had an incredible and memorable experience!!!

Hiking on the Marangu Route - Many thanks to luca and david for the great organization and implementation of the hike. I chose the marangu tour with an acclimatization day. It was a great experience. Despite that we hiked at the start of the rainy season, we had very good weather conditions and the huts very also not very crowded. The team was carried out including a cook, three porters and a guide (in German on request). the team gave me very good support and advice. I was particularly amazed at the quality of the food. delicious and varied dishes were prepared (there was always more than enough to eat). The communication before was very good and easy. I was even able to rent missing equipment from David at fair prices. All in all, I would be happy to recommend the company.

THE BEST KILIMANJARO TRIP - It was a really good trip. David, our main guide, was phenomenal and played a huge role in my submitting. He went above and beyond my expectations and even carried my bag for most of the night on summit night. I have already recommended your company, and more specifically James, to all of my friends who are considering climbing Kilimanjaro. Overall, the trip was phenomenal and I have no negative feedback. Keep retaining guys like David and I'm sure the company will continue to prosper!

Incredible Experience - Our guide was a gem & knowledgeable about both safaris as well as Kilimanjaro. We saw incredible animals (Unfortunately we missed Rhino out of the Big 5), landscape, and local people (also learned about different tribes in the Kilimanjaro region). We even learned somewhat Swahili! Our guide shared his knowledge about animals and their behaviour, plant life, the landscape, and history. We loved the lunches and surprise breakfast in the bush! We fell in love with it all. Our initial and constant contact throughout the booking and preparation process was with Lucas. He was quick to reply and was very helpful in finding out our desires and made sure the trip we would experience would be successful. In fact, the trip he put together for us far exceeded my expectations. I booked the safari (4 days) as well as Kilimanjaro for 6 days via the Machame route. As you know, It is scary booking a trip of a lifetime and making a deposit in advance to be able to get lodging booked. You send the money hoping this is really a legit company that will take care of you. Let me assure you about Lucas and Serengeti African Tours, this company is top-notch and will honour their word! We were personally welcomed to Tanzania by Gasto (Great Guy). He was there to greet and welcome me to our long-planned Kilimanjaro trip as well as safari, also gave me a short trip around Moshi and the local market, and then during my stay in Arusha, Lucas greets and welcome me and made sure everything is great. This is a company that we will recommend to everyone that has a desire to see this incredible country and experience an incredible safari and Kilimanjaro hiking trip

Reaching Kilimanjaro- acomplished - We were a group of 7 from ages 25- 51 all of us reached the Summit! 100% success rate. It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience, the whole 7-day journey was amazing the guides were very friendly and dedicated to our goal of reaching the Summit. They were flexible since our group had climbers from different skill levels. The main guide adjusted the itinerary to make it more comfortable for us. The equipment was perfect for our trip and the weather was incredible we only encountered one small shower one afternoon. Our trip will be in our memories forever. Respect to our operator without them we could not have these memories
