Ol Doinyo Lengai is the only volcano in the world to erupt natrocarbonatite lava and is the most active volcano in Tanzania. With a height of 2586m/9370ft it was named Ol Doinyo Lengai or Mountain of God by the Maasai, and is a sacred site of pilgrimage for the Maasai and the dwelling place of their god Enka

‘Oldoinyo Lengai’ translates to “The Mountain of God” in the Maasai tongue. At 2962 metres high, the peak offers an unobstructed panorama into the crater of Tanzania’s sole active volcano, as per official documentation, and the planet’s unique carbonatite volcano; systematic documentation of volcanic activity has been recorded since 1883, with the most significant eruption scattering ash as far as 100 kilometres across to Loliondo at the northwestern Kenyan frontier.
