Highlights

For all water enthusiasts and guests who appreciate stunning natural sights, or travelers looking to cool off in Arusha’s warm climate, a trip to the hot springs is the perfect choice!

Nestled in the desert area between Arusha and Moshi is the beautiful mineral spring, locally known as ‘Chemka,’ which means boiling or bubbling in Kiswahili. It’s about a two-and-a-half-hour drive from Arusha and quite an adventure, passing through small villages and vast desert landscapes. After traversing the dry desert, the spring emerges like an oasis, surrounded by large fig trees. The spring resembles a natural pool with crystal-clear turquoise water. The fig tree roots extend into the spring, providing natural ladders for entering and exiting the pool. Mischievous monkeys can be seen swinging from branch to branch in the surrounding trees, likely on the lookout for snacks! During this trip, your guide will provide lunch at the spring.

The backdrop to the spring includes the Blue Mountains to the southeast (where Tanzanite is mined) and Mount Kilimanjaro to the southwest, offering breathtaking views. This location is ideal for those seeking relaxation, a swim, and the chance to enjoy Tanzania’s magnificent nature. Before concluding the day and heading back home, there is an opportunity to stroll through small villages, greet the locals, cross a swing bridge, find a small waterfall, and enjoy a splendid view of Mount Kilimanjaro. This excursion is perfect for a full day.

great experience - such a fun way to spend a day in arusha! our guide was lovely and left us to do our own thing at the springs, then met up with us again for lunch. the lunch provided was very good and we could choose when we wanted to eat and how long we wanted to spend at each place. the waterfall and bridge we visited afterward was fun too, but a bit of a tricky hike down. it would have been nice to do the waterfall first and the springs last so we could cool off after getting hot and sweaty. asante sana for a great day!

Worth a visit for a relaxing few hours - This is a beautiful place but not well managed as an attraction. The road is bad in wet weather once you leave the main Arusha-Moshi highway and apparently the locals remove the signposts hoping you will then ask and pay one of them to be a guide for you... Once you get there the water itself is a beautiful blue but the accompanying facilities are pretty basic - uncomfortable wooden benches and poor quality toilets. You can buy food such as nice chips and meat. That said the children really enjoyed the swimming and jumping into the water from the swinging rope. There are rubber rings (car inner-tubes) available for those who can't swim.
