A Journey Begins: From Moshi to Tarangire

As a wildlife photographer with a penchant for adventure, I found myself once again drawn to the wild heart of Africa. This time, it was the promise of witnessing Tanzania’s Big Five that lured me to embark on a 2 Day Safari in Tarangire and Ngorongoro Crater. The journey began with a pick-up from my hotel in Moshi, a town nestled at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro. Though the company was based in Arusha, they graciously arranged for a transfer, albeit at an additional cost.

The drive to Tarangire National Park was a prelude to the wonders that awaited. Our guide, Will, was a quiet presence at first, but his knowledge and passion for the wildlife soon became apparent. As we entered the park, the landscape unfolded like a living tapestry, with bulbous baobabs standing sentinel over the savannah. The dry season had drawn vast herds of wildebeest and zebra to the Tarangire River, and with them, the predators that thrive in this harsh yet beautiful environment.

Despite the initial discomfort of the safari vehicle, which had seen better days, the thrill of the chase and the raw beauty of the park more than compensated. The sight of elephants, their massive forms silhouetted against the setting sun, was a moment that resonated deeply with my love for these majestic creatures.

As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting a golden glow over the crater, it was time to return to Arusha. The company had kindly stored my luggage, allowing me to head straight to the airport for my onward journey. It was a thoughtful gesture that underscored the warmth and hospitality I had experienced throughout the safari.

Reflecting on the adventure, I was reminded of the importance of sustainable travel. While the vehicle’s condition left room for improvement, the dedication of the team and the unforgettable encounters with wildlife made this a journey to cherish. Investing in better vehicles would undoubtedly enhance the experience, but the heart of the safari lies in the connection with nature and the people who guide us through it.
