Eritrea Unveiled: A Journey Through Asmara’s Art Deco and Beyond
Eritrea’s unexpected beauty drew me in, and the promise of exploring Asmara’s Art Deco wonders sealed the deal. Join me as I recount my vibrant journey through this captivating country.
Discovering Asmara: A City of Art Deco Dreams
Stepping off the plane in Asmara, I was immediately struck by the city’s unique blend of Italian charm and African vibrancy. Known as “Piccola Roma” or Little Rome, Asmara is a treasure trove of Art Deco architecture, a style that has always fascinated me as a former city planner. The first day of my Asmara Adventure was a whirlwind of sights and sounds, starting with the bustling Asmara Central Market. Here, I witnessed the ingenious ways Eritreans recycle and repurpose materials, a testament to their resourcefulness and creativity.
The highlight of the day was undoubtedly the Fiat Tagliero building, an architectural marvel that resembles an airplane. As a lover of urban landscapes, I was captivated by its bold design and the story behind its construction. Our guide, Selihom, was a fountain of knowledge, sharing insights into the city’s history and the significance of its many Italian-era buildings. Her passion for Eritrea was infectious, and her insider tips led us to hidden gems that I would have otherwise missed.
Keren: A Market Like No Other
The journey from Asmara to Keren was an adventure in itself, with winding roads offering breathtaking views of the Eritrean countryside. Keren’s market was a sensory overload, with the sights, sounds, and yes, the smells of the camel, sheep, and donkey market creating an unforgettable experience. It was here that I truly felt the pulse of Eritrean life, as locals bartered and traded with a fervor that was both chaotic and beautiful.
Our road trip took an unexpected turn when our car hit a rock, but this mishap turned into a magical moment as a troop of baboons appeared, curious and unafraid. It was a reminder of the unexpected wonders that travel can bring, and a highlight of my time in Eritrea. The day ended with a delicious meal of engera and meat, a dish I had come to love during my stay.
Massawa: Coastal Charms and Historical Wonders
Massawa, with its coastal allure, was the perfect finale to our Eritrean adventure. The historical mosque facing Jerusalem was a sight to behold, a testament to the country’s rich cultural tapestry. Our guide, Selihom, continued to impress with her deep knowledge of Eritrean history and her ability to bring the past to life.
A boat ride to Green Island offered a serene escape, with breakfast on the beach and a swim in the crystal-clear waters. It was a moment of pure bliss, a chance to reflect on the incredible journey I had experienced. As we made our way back to Asmara, we stopped at a village known for its sweet oranges, a fitting end to a trip filled with unexpected delights.
Back in Asmara, our final dinner was a celebration of Eritrean culture, with traditional decor and paintings of the country’s diverse tribes. It was a bittersweet moment, knowing that my time in Eritrea was coming to an end, but grateful for the memories and the new friends I had made along the way. This Asmara Adventure was more than just a tour; it was an exploration of a country that defies expectations and leaves a lasting impression.
