Highlights
  • Assin Manso Ancestral Slave River Park - we visit the Assin Manso slave river site which served as the place where slaves had their last bath on African soil before being marched down to the slave castles. They were fed and cleaned so they appeared attractive and healthy to guarantee higher prices. hot branding irons were used to burn identifying marks onto the skin of captives. The marks were a scar on the shoulder, breast or upper arm to show ownership. Other times, branding was used to show that proper duty had been paid.  it is now a sacred place of remembrance.  it is home for the first  2 diasporas (Lady Crystal from Jamaica and Samuel Carson from New York) whose remains were brought to Ghana through the “door of return” and Reburied. Also remains of African slave descendants from Barbados are buried on the site to symbolize emancipation and reconnection.

Additional Information

Last we met, you were bound in iron. Your pleas echoed from the confined spaces, guided through the irreversible gate, stripped of your African roots. Mothers yearned for their snatched sons, while children lingered in hope of their parent’s return. The earth still grieves for the lives lost who couldn’t survive. Liberation was the solitary dream fueling our forebears, aspiring to bask once again in their homeland, not as captives, but as resilient progeny recognizing and honoring the strength and resolve that birthed them. Reestablish your bond with the soil, follow in our forebears’ footsteps, and reconnect with your kin. This is me recounting the overlooked narratives of our history’s darkest hours, those we wish to shun, but the sorrowful cries and tears linger on.

Perfect tour for Africans of the Diaspora returning Home - Nii was an amazing guide! At the beginning of our journey he set the tone of our tour with powerful message of remembrance and honoring our ancestors. The full day tour began very early and so he ensured we had a proper breakfast to start our day. The visit to the Ancestral Slave River was very moving. After the river we visited Kakum National Park. I was nervous crossing the canopy trail, but Nii was very supportive and helped encourage me across the trail! We then went to the Slave Castles, which as you can imagine was a very emotional experience. After the castles we enjoyed a pleasant lunch on the beach where Nii helped us order delicious traditional Ghanaian dishes! If you are planning to visit Ghana, I highly recommend you book with Nii as he was a wonderful guide with great energy and vast knowledge of this beautiful country!

Highly recommended - Learning the actual history that is not always shared in America, and meeting new people. Going through the castles was a great experience.

Awesome Experience 👏🏽 - This tour went wayyyy beyond my expectations! Parts of the trip were extremely emotional (slave river and dungeons). Others parts were super fun, such as the National park and a nice lunch on a beautiful beach. For the National park make sure you stay hydrated and wear good fitting shoes. I do not recommend sandals or flip flops Nii was the PERFECT tour guide. He was knowledgeable about every attraction we visited and made sure he explained everything in a way that was easy to understand. Nii has a great personality and I felt completely safe with him as a single female traveler from the States. He makes sure your tour is comfortable and enjoyable! I highly recommend!

A great way to get the real Ghanaian experience!! - This is a true Ghanaian experience!! Nii is such a phenomenal tour guide. My girlfriend and I saw the Elmina Castle, Cape Coast Castle, and the river where the last bath took place as well. Such a heavy emotional experience. I would love to do it again. Also, the food places Nii took us to were really delicious. Having authentic Ghanaian food in Ghana is beyond amazing!!
