Basilica Papale e Sacro Convento di San Francesco d’Assisi - Designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site, the Basilica of St. Francis was constructed under the guidance of Brother Elias, vicar general and architect of the order, beginning in 1228, just two years after the saint’s passing, as a place intended to house his remains. Pope Gregory IX laid the first stone on July 17, 1228, the day following the canonization of St. Francis, at a site previously used for executions and burials of criminals. According to tradition, Francis himself, on his deathbed, pointed out this location to his companions as the place for his burial.

Basilica di Santa Chiara - The Basilica of St. Clare of Assisi, constructed with the distinctive pink stone from the Subasio mountain quarry, features valuable frescoes dating from the 12th to the 14th century. In the chapel on the right, along the singular nave of St. Clare of Assisi, ending in a transept and polygonal apse, visitors can admire the Crucifix which, according to tradition, invited St. Francis in the church of St. Damiano to “rebuild the Church.”
-
Basilica di Santa Maria degli Angeli - Built on a grand scale, the Basilica di Santa Maria degli Angeli is the seventh largest Christian church. Its grandeur may contrast with the simplicity advocated by St. Francis himself, but the influx of pilgrims visiting the primitive Porziuncola chapel and the Cappella del Transito necessitated a building capable of accommodating the faithful. The Porziuncola chapel was given to St. Francis by the Benedictines and is significant as it was the initial nucleus from which the Franciscan order emerged. The Cappella del Transito is the site where the saint passed away on October 4th, 1226.

Basilica di Santa Rita - The saint, born in 1381 in nearby Roccaporena and baptized as “Margherita,” initially married at her father’s wish, foregoing her desire to join an Augustinian convent, which was her true aspiration. After 18 years of a challenging and violent marriage, her exemplary behavior led her husband to convert. During a period of communal conflicts, her husband was killed by the Casciani family; “Margherita,” to prevent a bloody and endless vendetta, forgave her fellow townspeople and was welcomed into the Monastery of the Augustinian Sisters of Santa Maria Maddalena. In 1442, on the night of Holy Friday, she received the stigmata from a thorn of the crown of the Crucifix, which, according to tradition, embedded itself in her forehead.

Chiesa di Santa Maria Maggiore / Santuario della Spogliazione - Venerable Carlo Acutis, from a young age, frequently recited rosaries and received his First Communion at the age of 7. He contracted leukemia at a young age, and although he requested his parents to take him on pilgrimages to the sites of all known Eucharistic miracles worldwide, his declining health prevented this. He passed away from M3 fulminant leukemia on October 12, 2006, at the age of 15. He was buried in Assisi according to his wishes.

Visitors have been flocking to Assisi, Italy from the 13th century onwards to pay their respects to St. Francis, who was born and laid to rest in this town. Yet, its charm extends beyond its religious significance. This dreamy, picture-perfect town, set against the backdrop of the undulating landscape of Umbria and the woods of Monte Subasio, is one of the world’s most immaculately conserved medieval towns and one of Italy’s most enchanting treasures. Not everyone might be aware that Saint Rita of Cascia is often referred to as “the saint of the impossible”. St. Rita’s narrative is a testament to the strength of prayer and faith. She received the Stigmata of Our Lord on her forehead. Even though this stigmata emitted a notably unpleasant smell, she endured it with humility and at her demise in 1457, her body exuded the aroma of blossoms.
