The four ribbed vaults are embellished alternately with golden stars on a blue background and paintings.

The temple was originally built in the 1st century by Gnaeus Caesius and Titus Caesius Priscus, who were two of the city’s quattuorviri and also funded its construction.

- Eremo delle Carceri - Situated 4km from the center of Assisi, this white building is nestled in a tranquil lane surrounded by mountains. It is the hermitage of the Carceri where St. Francis and his followers engaged in prayer and meditation. “Eremo” translates to hermitage in Italian.
- San Damiano - San Damiano is a church with an adjoining monastery near Assisi, Italy. Established in the 12th century, it was the first monastery of the Order of Saint Clare, where Saint Clare formed her community.

Its grandeur contrasts with the simplicity advocated by St. Francis, yet the influx of pilgrims visiting the primitive Porziuncola chapel and the Cappella del Transito necessitated a structure capable of accommodating the faithful.
