Into the Heart of Hirkan

As the sun rose over the Talysh Mountains, I found myself standing at the entrance of Hirkan National Park, a place that had long been on my bucket list. The park, a lush expanse of deciduous forest, is a sanctuary for a myriad of plant species, some of which are found nowhere else on Earth. The air was crisp, filled with the scent of damp earth and the distant call of birds. It was a reminder of why I fell in love with wildlife photography and conservation in the first place.

The park’s highlands are home to the elusive Persian leopard, a creature I had only ever dreamed of capturing through my lens. Though sightings are rare, the mere possibility of encountering such a majestic animal added an exhilarating edge to my trek. As I hiked through the dense forest, I marveled at the diversity of life around me. Each step was a reminder of the delicate balance of nature and the importance of preserving these wild spaces for future generations.

A Symphony of Wings at Qizilagac

Leaving the mountains behind, I journeyed to the Qizilagac State Reserve, a haven for migratory birds. The reserve, established in 1929, spans nearly 900 square kilometers and is a critical stopover for birds traveling from Siberia and northern Europe. As I arrived, the sky was alive with movement—a breathtaking spectacle of wings and feathers.

The reserve’s information center provided a wealth of knowledge about the various species that call this place home, many of which are listed in the Red Book of Azerbaijan. As I wandered along the trails, I was struck by the sheer number of birds, each one a testament to the reserve’s success in providing a safe haven for these travelers. It was a humbling experience, reminding me of the interconnectedness of ecosystems and the role we play in their preservation.

Reflections by the Khanbulanchay Reservoir

My journey concluded at the Khanbulanchay Reservoir, a serene body of water nestled in the foothills. Surrounded by lush forests, the reservoir offered a peaceful retreat from the bustling activity of the reserves. Here, I took a moment to reflect on the experiences of the past few days.

Sitting by the water’s edge, I was reminded of the importance of sustainable travel and the impact it can have on preserving these natural wonders.
