A Journey Through Asunción’s Heart
As the sun rose over the vibrant city of Asunción, I found myself eagerly anticipating the day’s adventure. The promise of exploring Paraguay’s capital through a private excursion was too enticing to resist. As a biologist and environmental activist, I was particularly drawn to the idea of visiting the Bio-School and Hotel Cerrito, a model of sustainability and self-sufficiency. The thought of witnessing such an innovative approach to education and conservation was thrilling.
Our journey began with a warm welcome from our guide, who greeted us at the hotel. We embarked on a comfortable, air-conditioned vehicle, setting off on a scenic drive through the lush landscapes that surround Asunción. The city, with its blend of modernity and tradition, unfolded before us, each corner revealing a new story, a new piece of history.
The drive was a gentle reminder of the beauty that lies in the heart of South America. The vibrant greens of the trees, the distant calls of birds, and the gentle hum of the city created a symphony that was both calming and invigorating. It was a perfect prelude to the wonders that awaited us.
Discovering Benjamin Aceval
Our first stop was the district of Benjamin Aceval, where the Bio-School and Hotel Cerrito stood as a testament to the power of sustainable living. As we arrived, I was immediately struck by the harmony between the built environment and the natural world. The school farm, self-sufficient and thriving, was a marvel to behold. It was a living, breathing example of how education and conservation can coexist and flourish.
Walking through the farm, I was captivated by the innovative practices employed to generate income and sustain the community. The integration of traditional knowledge with modern techniques was inspiring, offering a glimpse into a future where humanity and nature thrive together.
We also had the opportunity to visit the Tambo and engage with the Toba Qom community. Their stories, rich with cultural heritage and resilience, added depth to our understanding of the region. It was a humbling experience, reminding me of the importance of preserving not just the environment, but the cultures that are intertwined with it.
Embracing Nature in Cerrito
After our guided tour, we were given the freedom to explore Cerrito at our own pace. The two hours of free time allowed us to immerse ourselves in the natural beauty that enveloped the area. I took this opportunity to indulge in some birdwatching, a personal passion of mine. The diversity of avian life was astounding, each species a vibrant splash of color against the verdant backdrop.
As I wandered through the trails, the tranquility of the surroundings was a balm for the soul. The rustling leaves, the distant chatter of wildlife, and the gentle breeze created a serene atmosphere that was both rejuvenating and reflective. It was a reminder of why I dedicate my life to conservation and the protection of these precious ecosystems.
As the day drew to a close, we returned to Asunción, our hearts full of cherished memories and newfound appreciation for the region’s natural and cultural treasures. This private excursion was more than just a tour; it was a journey into the heart of Paraguay, a celebration of its beauty, and a call to preserve it for future generations. I left with a renewed sense of purpose, eager to share my experiences and advocate for the conservation of this remarkable part of the world.
