The two temples at Abu Simbel are renowned for their unique style and are considered masterpieces of ancient Egypt.
These temples showcase the glory and grandeur of the New Kingdom. To save them from flooding, the Egyptian government and UNESCO collaborated. The Temple of Ramses II is dedicated to the four universal gods: Ptah, Re-Her-Akhtey, Amun-Re, and Ramses II himself. This grand temple is also known as The Sun Temple of Ramses II. The Temple of Queen Nefertari, also called the Temple of Hathor, symbolizes the union of Ramses II, Nefertari, Hathor, and the Sun God. Spend approximately 3 hours exploring the site before returning to Aswan.
- Abu Simbel Temples - Ramesses II, also spelled Rameses or Ramses, meaning ‘Ra is the one who bore him’ or ‘born of Ra’, reigned from 1279–1213 BC. Known as Ramesses the Great, he was the third pharaoh of Egypt’s Nineteenth Dynasty and is often considered the greatest and most powerful pharaoh of the New Kingdom, the most powerful era of Ancient Egypt. His successors and later Egyptians referred to him as the “Great Ancestor”.
- Temple of Nefertari - Nefertari, also known as Nefertari Meritmut, was an Egyptian queen and the first of the Great Royal Wives of Ramesses the Great. Her name means ‘beautiful companion’ and Meritmut means ‘Beloved of [the goddess] Mut’. She is one of the most well-known Egyptian queens, alongside Cleopatra, Nefertiti, and Hatshepsut. Unlike some of these queens, she did not reign in her own right. Nefertari was highly educated, able to read and write hieroglyphs, a rare skill at the time, which she used in her diplomatic correspondence with other royals. Her tomb, QV66, is one of the largest and most elaborately decorated in the Valley of the Queens. Ramesses also built a temple for her at Abu Simbel, next to his own colossal monument.
