Nile Cruise / Kom Ombo Temple
Temple of Kom Ombo - The Temple of Sobek, or Kom Ombo Temple, dedicated to the crocodile god, is best approached by water. Situated on a scenic bluff by the river, this temple is a must-visit, even though crocodiles no longer inhabit the river or the sacred lake within the temple complex.
Like the other sites between Aswan and Luxor, Kom Ombo dates back to the Ptolemaic Dynasty and was completed under Roman rule. The temple is dedicated to both Sobek and Horus, with its design reflecting this dual purpose. It is symmetrically mirrored along its main axis, with each half honoring one of the two gods. The pylon entrance is no longer standing, leaving the hypostyle hall as the main feature for visitors. The Crocodile Museum on the temple grounds displays crocodile mummies.
Temple of Horus at Edfu / Luxor Temple
Temple of Horus - The Temple of Horus at Edfu is considered the most impressive of the Nile-side temples between Luxor and Aswan. It is a mandatory stop for all cruise ships on this route. Although constructed during the Greco-Roman Period, the builders preserved the style of Egypt’s ancient pharaohs, offering a glimpse of what other ruined temples might have looked like if built 2000 years later.
Located in the center of Edfu, the temple was once surrounded by the village, with some houses built on its sand-filled roof. These buildings have been removed, but the excavation is evident as the surrounding structures overlook the temple complex, which is several meters below the modern ground level.
Luxor Temple - This temple is a testament to why Luxor is known as “The World’s Largest Outdoor Museum.” Situated in the modern city of Luxor, built on the ancient capital of Thebes, Luxor Temple is one of the best-preserved ancient monuments.
