As you make your way across the main lobby to the Museum’s turn-styles, the opening collection awaits you. The Acropolis Slopes Gallery is home to artefacts discovered at sanctuaries founded upon the fringes of the Acropolis. It also showcases items used in the everyday lives of ancient Athenians across different historical periods.
Progressing to the Archaic Acropolis Gallery, you can observe the displays from every angle, as they are 3D exhibits. Under the varying natural light, subtle surface differences in the sculptures become visible, letting you choose your optimal viewing spot.
Upon reaching the final Gallery, you’ll get the chance to marvel at singular artworks that served as reference models for later epochs, from ancient times up to the present day. Here, for the first time in history, you may see up close the coffered ceiling of the Propylaia, and the sculptures from Athena Nike’s temple parapet, along with the Caryatids – or Erechtheion’s Korai – on the balcony that overlooks the Acropolis Slopes Gallery. The key monuments that make up the Classical Acropolis include the Propylaia, the Athena Nike temple, and the Erechtheion.
The exhibition wraps up at the north side of the first-floor gallery, where you’ll find numerous statues that were once set upon the Acropolis. These statues depict deities, heroes, mythological themes, and portraits of esteemed men, encompassing the Sanctuary of Artemis Brauronia.
