Highlights
  • Acropolis - The Acropolis is home to an exceptional array

of incredible classical masterpieces and thousands of

years’ worth of history. The word ‘Acropolis’ actually translates as ‘high city’ due to its elevated

position above the rest of Athens.

  • Parthenon - The Parthenon was originally built in the 5

th Century BCE. This incomparable temple was built to

honor the Greek Goddess of Wisdom, Athena, whom the city is named after

  • Acropolis Museum - Attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors every year, the museum is rapidly becoming as famous

as

the architectural wonders that surround it. Opened to the public in 2009, the museum is home to

an incredible collection of Ancient and Classical Greek artefacts all housed in a state of the art

setting.

  • Temple of Olympian Zeus - The temple took well over 600 years to complete and it stood proudly for approximately 200 years

before time and neglect began to dilapidate the building until it reached its present condition which

nonetheless evokes the temple’s former grandeur.

  • Panathenaic Stadium - Greece and the Olympic Game

s have a dramatically intertwined history with the fortunes of one

often affecting the fortunes of the other. This relationship can be traced back literally thousands of

years with the ancient Olympic Games dating back as far as the 7th Century BCE

  • Tomb of the Unknown Soldier - It is uncertain whether there any actual remains at the site but the tribute commemorates those

who have made the ultimate sacrifice defending their nation and its principals, throughout history.

  • Syntagma Station - Although its history is relatively recent compared with the rest of this ancient city, Syntagma Square

has been the central point for all of the major political movements in Athens over the last 200 years

  • Plaka - Interestingly, considering Plaka is

of central importance to Athens, the origins of its name have been

lost to the ages. In fact, the area was not even known as Plaka until the Greek War of Independence

came to a close in the early stages of the 1800’s.

Average Athens - After having many guided tours, I thought it would be fun to try a self guided audio tour; no rushing, see the sights at my own pace. This tour delivered just what I wanted. Each recording was insightful and even provided verbal directions to the next sight on the list even though a map was also provided. I did miss having a physical local guide as we often had questions at each sight. Great tour for the price, though. We took about 5 hours as we stopped and entered each location, spent quite a bit of time at the museum, and had lunch during the tour as well. If you want to just see the sights, you could complete this tour in under 2 hours.

Could be better - It was not easy to follow. A resume of historical facts, not a guide. Has to be improved to be called a real audioguide.
