The Marathon Tomb, located close to the road, 4 km from the town of Marathon, is also known as the Tomb of the Athenians. It is the final resting place of the 192 Athenian soldiers who perished in the Battle of Marathon. This battle, which took place in this fertile plain, resulted in the defeat of the Persian army by the Athenians and is considered one of the most significant moments in European history. Listen to your guide as they recount the story of this bloody battle that occurred in 490 B.C. during the first Persian invasion of Greece.
