Acropolis - The Acropolis of Athens is an ancient citadel perched on a rocky hill above the city. It stands as one of the world’s most important archaeological sites, representing the cultural and architectural triumphs of ancient Greece. The Acropolis features several iconic structures, most notably the Parthenon, a temple dedicated to Athena, the city’s patron goddess. Other significant buildings include the Erechtheion, the Temple of Athena Nike, and the Propylaea, the grand entrance to the site. Built mainly in the 5th century BCE under Pericles’ leadership, the Acropolis exemplifies the artistic, architectural, and democratic advancements of Athens’ Golden Age. It remains a powerful symbol of classical spirit and civilization, drawing millions of visitors annually.
Temple of Olympian Zeus - The Temple of Olympian Zeus in Athens, also known as the Temple of Zeus, was one of the largest temples of the ancient world. Construction began in the 6th century BCE under Athenian tyrants and was completed in the 2nd century CE during the reign of Roman Emperor Hadrian. Dedicated to Zeus, the king of the Olympian gods, the temple originally boasted 104 colossal columns, each 17 meters high, of which only 15 remain today. The temple’s grand scale and architectural magnificence reflected the immense power and reverence for Zeus in Greek religion. Located southeast of the Acropolis, its ruins remain a significant historical and cultural landmark in Athens.
Panathenaic Stadium - The Panathenaic Stadium, or Kallimarmaro, is a historic stadium in Athens, Greece. Initially constructed in 330 BCE, it was later rebuilt in marble by Roman senator Herodes Atticus in 144 CE. The stadium was designed for the Panathenaic Games, a major athletic festival in ancient Greece honoring the goddess Athena. Known for its horseshoe shape, it is the only stadium in the world made entirely of marble. Extensively refurbished in the 19th century, it hosted the first modern Olympic Games in 1896. Today, it is a prominent cultural landmark used for ceremonial events and sports activities.
Syntagma - Syntagma Square, located in the heart of Athens, sits directly in front of the Hellenic Parliament building. The Changing of the Guard ceremony, performed every hour daily by the Evzones, an elite unit of the Greek Presidential Guard, takes place here. The Evzones are known for their distinctive traditional uniforms, including a kilt-like garment called a “fustanella.” This tradition symbolizes the dedication and discipline of the Greek military forces.
Mount Lycabettus - Mount Lycabettus is a notable hill in Athens, Greece, offering panoramic views of the city and its surroundings. At about 277 meters (909 feet) high, it is the highest point in Athens. Legend has it that the hill was formed when the goddess Athena dropped a limestone rock she was carrying. Visitors can reach the summit by funicular railway, a winding path, or a series of steps. At the top, there is the whitewashed Chapel of St. George, a restaurant, and an open-air theater hosting concerts and performances. Mount Lycabettus is a popular spot for both locals and tourists, providing stunning views, especially at sunset, and a peaceful retreat from the city’s hustle and bustle.
