- Acropolis - The most magnificent sanctuary of ancient Athens, primarily devoted to its patron, the goddess Athena, has been a central feature of the city for millennia. The Acropolis monuments (the Parthenon, the Temple of Athena Nike, the Erechtheion, the Propylaea, the Theater of Dionysus,…) are all exceptional examples of ancient architecture, influencing art and culture for centuries and blending seamlessly with their natural surroundings.
- Theater of Dionysus - Dionysus, the god of wine and grape harvest, was honored with the oldest theatre in Athens. This theatre was the venue for the first performances of the unparalleled works of Aeschylus, Sophocles, Euripides, and Aristophanes.
- Temple of Athena Nike - Dedicated to the goddesses Athena and Nike, the Temple of Athena Nike honored Nike, the goddess of victory, and Athena in her victorious form. Legend has it that the statue of the goddess in the temple was wingless to ensure she would never leave Athens.
- Erechtheion - The Erechtheion, an ancient Greek temple on the Acropolis of Athens, was built to house the ancient wooden cult statue of Athena and to celebrate the city’s peak of power and influence.
- Parthenon - Dominating the Acropolis hill in Athens, the Parthenon was constructed in the mid-5th century BCE and dedicated to Athena Parthenos (“Athena the Virgin”). It is widely regarded as the pinnacle of the Doric order, the simplest of the three Classical Greek architectural styles.
- Ancient Agora of Athens - The Agora was the vibrant heart of ancient Athens, serving as the hub of political, commercial, administrative, and social activities, as well as the religious and cultural center and the seat of justice.
- Temple of Hephaestus - The splendid Temple of Hephaestus, one of the best-preserved ancient temples globally, was a place of worship for two key deities for many merchants and shop owners of the Ancient Agora: Hephaestus, the god of metallurgy, and Athena Ergani, the goddess protecting potters and cottage industries.

Learned so much - Athena was able to bring the Greek Gods to life! Her stories were so interesting and paralleled with history. I would highly recommend this tour.

Must do - Our guide was very knowledgeable about this historic and mythological aspects of the places we visited. They organised the entrance tickets for me as I just landed in Athens that morning. Worthwhile doing, you definitely don’t need to worry about leg day for the rest of the week 🤣🤣 bring plenty of water or a refillable bottle

Highly recommend - Michael (sorry I don't know the Greek spelling!) was a wonderful guide. He is very knowledgeable, pleasant to chat with, and a skilled guide. We loved learning about and experiencing the rich history of Athens and the Acropolis. We went in the middle of the day and later in the tourist season, which afforded is the luxuries of 1) smaller crowds and 2) lower temperatures. If you're visiting Athens, a tour like this is a must and we couldn't be happier with our experience with Michael and Alternative Athens.

Great experience - We were very pleased with our tour of the Acropolis with Alternative Athens. Our tour was originally scheduled for 8:00 AM, but the day before they recommended a change in time to 12:00 PM instead, to avoid crowds. We were skeptical at first, but it was the best decision ever! There were still a number of tourists, but the crowds were considerably less than if we had gone in the morning (especially since it was a European Heritage day and admission was free). Our guide Micheal was very personable, and the overall group size was manageable. Would definitely recommend this tour to others.

Great tour showcasing both history and ancient Greek mythology! - We had a great experience on this tour! Maria, our guide, was so knowledgeable and friendly. We loved how she connected ancient Greek mythology with history. It was comprehensive and started at the outside of the temple of zeus (there's not much left here so I don't think it's worth paying to go inside), then we did a very thorough tour of the acropolis and walked to the roman agora, where we saw the temple of Hephaestus. There is quite a few steps so be mindful if you have mobility issues or a stroller. We felt like we have plenty of time to explore the sites and breaks in between. Would definitely recommend!

Excellent experience on private tours for City Streets and Mythological Tours - We spent two days with Alternative Athens on private tours. Our first day was the City Streets and Great Eats and we also did the Mythology Tour. Both tours were truly excellent. Our guides were both natives of Athens and provided us with insightful and interesting commentary throughout our time together. These two tours gave us an excellent overview of both modern and ancient Athens. We loved the food stops on the City tour and everything was very well paced. There was a lot of walking on both tours and my family all loved it. Alternative Athens was also very responsive during the planning process as well.

A great history lesson - Magda was so informative and explained everything well! I learned a lot about Ancient Greece and she was able to accommodate different needs from the different members of our group. It helped to book the acropolis tickets through the company and it was hassle-free! There was some confusion about which group we were in but they sorted it out with the company with ease. We were able to learn a lot and it helped that the acropolis tour part was earlier in the day when it was less crowded.
