- Leonidas Monument - Visit the historic battlefield of Thermopylae, where the Battle of Thermopylae took place between the alliance of Ancient Greek city-states, led by King Leonidas I of Sparta, and the Achaemenid Empire of Xerxes I. This battle occurred in 480 BC over three days during the second Persian invasion of Greece. Admire the Leonidas monument, erected in 1955 and crafted by sculptor Vasos Falireas. The brass sculpture of the Spartan King with his spear and shield is truly remarkable. Adjacent to the Leonidas monument is the Thermopylae battle information center, where you can watch an informative 10-minute video.
