Highlights
  • Spinalonga - Two hours after your pick-up, we arrive at Spinalonga, the last leper colony in Europe, situated in Elounda, from where we take a boat to Spinalonga Island. The Venetians originally fortified the islet in 1579 by constructing a fortress with 40 cannons, which are among the best-preserved walls in Europe.

It served as a leper colony from 1903 until 1957, providing lepers with a better quality of life, medical assistance, and economic support. You can individually explore the ruins of the market street with its shops, the hospital, and the many small houses where lepers lived in isolation.

  • Elounda - After leaving Spinalonga Island, we have free time to explore the unique village of Elounda or swim in the crystal-clear waters of Elounda Bay.
  • Agios Nikolaos - We will visit Agios Nikolaos, a town with 14,000 inhabitants built on the side of the Gulf of Mirabello. In the center of Agios Nikolaos is Lake Voulismeni, likely formed by an earthquake. Here, we can take a coffee break or walk around the lake, offering a great view from above of the center and the harbor of Agios Nikolaos. Next to the charming harbor are shady, tree-lined streets filled with shops for some “serious shopping.” When we leave Agios Nikolaos, it will take us one hour to visit the olive factory.
  • Omalia Olive Press - An olive factory in Malia where you can taste the famous Cretan olive oil.

Overcrowded but great locations - Hotel pick up was great. Was told 40 mim coach but it was an hour and 15. Elsa was our tour guide. She was very informative and really impressed us at spinalonga with her knowledge. Would really recommend visiting. What we didn't expect was the hidden charge to arrive on the island to then be asked to pay another 8 euros pp, when we were told it was included. It was also total chaos trying to get a ticket as a few boat loads of tourists arrived at once. Our boat was also packed which we didn't enjoy. The island itself was great though. We enjoyed Elounda and the next place we visited, both amazing and would recommend a visit. Particularly the second place. Then we went to the olive factory. This is free to enter and was included as part of the trip. It was great to listen to the owner. Unfortunately when we went to try the olive oil, the heaps of tourists also visiting as part of the trip who didn't listen to the tour were busy using all the cups to try the olive oil, so when we went to try with a few others, which we were told was included as part of the trip, we couldn't. That was disappointing. Overall the places and tour guides were great. There were however far too many people on the tour, which combined with other tours at the same time, meant it was quite chaotic at times. Our bus was also that full a couple of people had to stand (but that was because a couple of people would take up two seats, who eventually moved).
