Starting at the Kallimarmaro Stadium, this journey follows the path of one of the most notable cities in global history. The Marathon Tomb, situated near the road, 4 km from the town of Marathon, is also referred to as the Tomb of the Athenians. It serves as the final resting place for the 192 Athenian soldiers who perished in the Battle of Marathon. This battle, fought on the fertile plain, led to the Athenian defeat of the Persian army and is regarded as a pivotal moment in European history. Listen to the guide as they narrate the story of this fierce battle that occurred in 490 B.C. during the first Persian invasion of Greece. • Sanctuary of the Egyptian Gods - This complex was established by Herodes Atticus around 160 AD. The renowned orator, sophist, and benefactor was from Marathon and lived here, and the complex was likely built on his estate. The sanctuary is identified as “the sanctuary of Canopus” mentioned by Herodes’ biographer Philostratos (2nd-3rd century AD). Excavations have uncovered the extensive sanctuary of the Egyptian gods and the luxurious bathhouse (balneum), along with a large ellipsoidal cistern further south. Visitors can explore the archaeological site.
