Highlights
  • Athens - Our tour begins early in the morning from Athens to Meteora. Your driver will pick you up from your hotel, apartment, or the airport/port. The journey takes approximately 4.5 hours.
  • Kalabaka - Kalabaka is a town and the administrative center of the Meteora municipality in the Trikala regional unit, part of Thessaly, Greece. As of the 2011 census, the population was 12,000, with 8,330 residing in the town itself. The Meteora monasteries are situated nearby.
  • Meteora - Upon arrival at Meteora, we will visit up to three monasteries. These awe-inspiring monasteries are of significant cultural and natural importance. Formed by earthquakes and weathered by wind and water over millions of years, these colossal rocks are a true marvel of nature.

Meteora is a rock formation in central Greece that hosts one of the largest and most precipitously built complexes of Eastern Orthodox monasteries. Six of the original 24 monasteries are built on towering natural pillars and rounded boulders that dominate the landscape.

Meteora is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and its name means “lofty” or “elevated,” etymologically related to the word “meteor.”

Please dress modestly. Women are advised to wear long skirts and long sleeves. If you do not have appropriate attire, a skirt will be provided upon entry.

  • Meteora - Enjoy free time for lunch at a traditional Greek tavern with friends and family or go shopping in Kastraki, a charming village near Meteora.

  • Thermopylae - Thermopylae is a historic site in Greece known for its narrow coastal passage and hot sulfur springs. In Greek mythology, the Hot Gates are one of the entrances to Hades. Thermopylae is famous for the battle between Greek and Persian forces, commemorated by Simonides of Ceos with the epitaph, “Go tell the Spartans, stranger passing by, That here obedient to their laws we lie.” This pass is the only land route large enough to accommodate significant traffic between Lokris and Thessaly, making it a strategic location for several battles.

  • Battlefield of Thermopylae - As we depart from the stunning Meteora, we will reflect on the Battle of Thermopylae in 480 BCE, renowned as one of the most famous last stands in military history. We will visit the monument of King Leonidas of Sparta in Thermopylae on our way back to Athens in the late afternoon.

Thermopylae is globally recognized for the battle between Greek forces (including Spartans, Lakedemonians, Thebans, and Thespians) and the invading Persian army, commemorated by Simonides with the epitaph, “Go tell the Spartans, stranger passing by, That here obedient to their laws we lie.”

  • Leonidas Monument - Leonidas was a king of Sparta and the 17th ruler of the Agiad dynasty, which claimed descent from the mythological demigod Heracles and Cadmus. He was the son of King Anaxandridas II and succeeded his half-brother King Cleomenes I around 489 BC. Leonidas is best known for his role in the Second Persian War, where he led the allied Greek forces in a last stand at the Battle of Thermopylae (480 BC) to defend the pass from the Persian army. He died in the battle and became legendary as the leader of the 300 Spartans. Although the Greeks lost this battle, they successfully expelled the Persian invaders the following year.
  • Athens - We will begin our return journey to Athens in the late afternoon, with a drive of approximately 4.5 hours.

THE choice for private tour from Athens to Meteora. - This was a great private tour. From the fact that is was THE best priced private tour from Athens to Meteora to how great our driver and guide, Petros, was. He was a gentleman, told us interesting facts about the things we saw, took us to the best photo op places. He adjusted the trip to our needs (we mostly wanted to take photos of the surroundings). And he did his utmost best to accommodate us. He had plenty of water on hand to keep us hydrated as well. The location is absolutely magnificent and a must see. If you want a private tour to Meteora from Athens there is no better tour at such a great price.

Fabulous, memorable day. Highly recommend this experience. Excellent service. Our driver, Petro, was amazing. - Fabulous day from beginning to end. Our driver, Petro, was polite, punctual, knowledgeable and friendly. He took care that all our needs are met along the way - water, bathroom stops, etc. Meteora is a magical place. Petro pointed out the highlights, merits and history of everything we saw. I would highly recommend this experience. I would also add that being in good physical shape helps. There are a lot of stairs at the monasteries.

Must do excursion!! - Wow! This was an incredible, once in a lifetime’s, experience that I highly recommend. Going with a private driver is a little more expensive and was well worth it! Meteora is a place one should experience at your own pace. Peter was wonderful, very accommodating, and personalized our experience how we wanted it. He a good historian on Greek history which added to the overall experience. Lunch was a wonderful stop as well, at a lovely cafe with excellent Greek food. This is a must do excursion!

Don’t miss this opportunity to see Meteora - Petros was our guide and driver for the day, he was very polite and well mannered with great knowledge of the history and the area. It was our last day in Greece after 6 weeks of travelling, originally was going to omit Meteora as it was difficult to get to but we were glad we did this tour. Petros know exactly where to visit, which spot to stop and take pictures and allowing us plenty of time to explore and visit the monasteries. View was amazing, and really have to experience it in person to appreciate the beauty of it all. Lunch was great and you can order as many dishes as you wish, foods were amazing. Nothing was too much trouble to ask and we would highly recommend this tour.

Saved the Best for Last - We couldn't have spent our last full day in Greece any better way. Peter picked us up from our hotel right on time. He was friendly and informative. His car was clean, comfortable, and well maintained. He had a little cooler of bottled waters which we appreciated. Meteora and the Monasteries were spectacular. Words can't even begin to describe what we saw. Peter let us guide the pace of the day. He didn't rush us and he stopped at a dozen or so places for us to get out and take pictures. He waited patiently while we toured. As if all that wasn't enough he took us down to a quaint place in a little town for lunch. The food and service were the best we've had during our vacation. Portions were huge and prices were low. We had enough to take back to the hotel for dinner. The experience was well worth the cost and time it took to get there and back. The drive was beautiful as well. We highly recommend this tour, this company, and Peter.

Magic of Meteora - Bill and Peter were our drivers and did an outstanding job! The drive is 4 hours each way, they made sure we had restroom breaks and provided water. They made sure we saw and visited which monasteries we wanted and we took our time no rushing. When we were finished with one they were right there to pick us up. We did the lunch included, it was delicious we basically ordered whatever we wanted off the menu.
