Highlights
  • Kerameikos Archaeological Site - This site, often overlooked by tourists, is one of the most significant landmarks. The name Kerameikos means “ceramic,” named for the many ceramic workshops that once existed here. It also served as Athens’ cemetery for many centuries, where many notable Athenians were buried. It is also the site where Pericles delivered his famous “Epitaph” speech for the first casualties of the Peloponnesian War, extolling the virtues of Democracy and the Athenian way of life.
  • Monastiraki Flea Market - Enjoy a leisurely stroll through Athens’ Flea Market.
  • Hadrian’s Library - Built by Roman Emperor Hadrian in AD 132, Hadrian’s Library is located on the north side of the Acropolis of Athens.
  • Roman Agora - The Roman Agora in Athens is situated north of the Acropolis and east of the Ancient Agora.
  • Tower of the Winds - This octagonal structure, known as the Tower of the Winds, was constructed by the astronomer Andronicus of Kyrristos in the 1st century BC. It functioned both as a wind indicator and a clock, making it the “Big Ben” and meteorological station of ancient Athens. The clock was solar-powered, but on cloudy days, a hydraulic mechanism would produce a sound every hour. It is considered the first meteorological station.
  • Plaka - Plaka is a picturesque neighborhood in Athens, characterized by its small houses and narrow streets.
  • Ancient Agora of Athens - This area was the heart of ancient Athens. Philosophers like Socrates and Plato, politicians like Solon and Themistocles, and other prominent Athenians and citizens would gather here to discuss and debate various matters.
  • Pnyx - Pnyx Hill is known as the world’s first parliament. It offers a great view of the area and is free to visit, proving that the best things in life are indeed free.
  • Philopappos Monument - The Philopappos Monument is a testament to the vanity of a wealthy man, but the location also offers some of the best views.
  • Acropolis - Greece’s most iconic monument is now open for you to visit and admire.

Excellent tour with a brilliant guide! - Firstly, Panos is truly excellent! I picked his tour because of the previous reviews about him. Panos is a genuine Greek gentlemen who was able to provide a rich and informative good paced walking guided tour of key areas in Athens. But his history knowledge is not only of Athens but beyond; the wars, key people in history etc. He is so knowledgeable and enjoys the engagement aspects of his tours so much too. The birthplace of democracy he took us to was wonderful, with a beautiful breeze as well. From there the view of The Parthenon was spectacular! He told us completely new things about the history of Greece and showed us places we never would have seen. For that we are so grateful for the time spent with him and that I found his tour on Viator :-)

Much immersive knowledge - I did the guided tour of Athens with Panos, a man understood and with a lot of knowledge about the city, about the history of the place, and Philosophy and democracy, the difference of the tour for me was to do the tour with a local guide who knows every corner of Athens, I recommend!

Captivating and engaging experience - Panos is a very knowledgeable and friendly person. His passion for history and philosophy are truly reflected in his knowledgeable explanations and detailed observations throughout the tour. My family and I thoroughly enjoyed the tour and quite honestly wished it was longer. We went back to the monuments that we passed throughout the tour, and found it very helpful to have the foundation of the history that was provided in the tour. Would highly recommend, equally for those with no prior knowledge or interest in philosophy as well as those highly interested in the matter.

An Unexpected Surprise - Panos was wonderful! My teenage girls weren't thrilled about the experience upon hearing we were doing it, but honestly, they ended up really enjoying the tour. As adults, we were fascinated how he structured the tour and how seamlessly a tremendous amount of knowledge and history was shared. It was fascinating and we got to see so many different historic points in Athens, many of which we would have walked right by, not truly recognizing their significance. The long view of the Acropolis, which felt like a special spot only a local would know about, was the highlight surprise of the tour! Would definitely recommend.

Bringing ancient Athens' impact on the world to life, thank you Panos! - This was more than a tour - it was an experience! Panos brought the beautiful canvas of Athens to life through stories and insights. He connected the ancient sites we were walking through to today's moral and political issues. Don't hesitate - highly recommend this tour if you want to really understand how ancient Athens continues to reverberate through the ages to the present day.

Great experience with thoughtful inspirations on philosophy and democracy - Tour guide Mr. Panos was a gentle, kind and highly educated person who have deep knowledge and reflexibities responding to wide-ragned questions. He guided us on ruins regarding to the birth of democracy and philosophy, but he also promoted us to think about the significances of philosophy in today. Learning about the culture of ancient Greek inspired us to discuss the matter deeply, and found each hypothesis thanks to Mr. Panos' mediations. Everybody who hopes to think about democracy in ancient and today's world in Athens surely has fun by participating in this great experience. Highly recommended!!
