• Acropolis - The Acropolis of Athens is an ancient citadel situated on a rocky hill above the city of Athens, featuring the remains of several significant ancient buildings, the most renowned being the Parthenon. The term acropolis comes from the Greek words ἄκρον (akron, “highest point, extremity”) and πόλις (polis, “city”). The term is generic, and there are many other acropoleis in Greece. In ancient times, the Acropolis of Athens was also known as Cecropia, named after the legendary serpent-man Cecrops, the supposed first king of Athens.

While evidence shows that the hill was inhabited as early as the fourth millennium BC, it was Pericles (c. 495–429 BC) in the fifth century BC who oversaw the construction of the buildings whose remains are the site’s most significant, including the Parthenon, the Propylaea, the Erechtheion, and the Temple of Athena Nike.

• Plaka - Plaka is the oldest neighborhood in Athens. Most streets are closed to car traffic, though you should still watch out for speeding motorcycles or delivery trucks. Once a nightclub district, most clubs closed when the government banned amplified music in the seventies to eliminate undesirables. The strategy worked, and now the area is filled with restaurants, jewelry stores, tourist shops, and cafes. Despite its commercialization, it remains a neighborhood and is arguably the nicest one in central Athens. While most restaurants cater to tourists, some offer good food, and if you follow my restaurant guide, you should enjoy your evenings without unpleasant surprises on the bill or gastrointestinal issues on the day you plan to visit the Acropolis.
• Change of Guards - Location: Syntagma Square

The Evzones, accompanied by a military band, march from their barracks behind the Parliament Building along Vasilissis Sofias Avenue to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, where a ceremonial change of guards occurs every hour. The Evzones provide a 24-hour honor guard, with an hourly sentry change performed in slow motion, which some say helps the troops’ circulation after standing motionless.

Many smile at the pompoms on the guards’ boots in Athens, but these men are part of an elite light infantry unit, the Evzones.

• Kallimarmaro - The Panathenaic Stadium of Athens, Greece (or Kallimarmaro): Known as the Roman Stadium, the Panathenaic Stadium, or simply Kallimarmaro (meaning made of fine marble). This incredible stadium stands at the end of Herodes Atticus Street, within walking distance of the Temple of Olympian Zeus, the Arch of Hadrian, and the Acropolis.
• Akadimia (Academy) - The Academy of Athens is Greece’s national academy and the highest research institution in the country. Established in 1926, its founding principle traces back to the historical Academy of Plato and operates under the Ministry of Education’s supervision. It is one of three beautiful buildings that stand next to each other, known to Athenians as “The Trilogy.”
