Highlights
  • Benaki Museum - Museum of Greek Culture - The collection of Prehistoric, Ancient Greek and Roman antiquities includes several exhibits from the dawn of Prehistory to the end of the Roman era such as gold jewels, collection of vases and sculptures, unique coins, outstanding examples of miniature work in faience and ivory, examples of glasswork, marble portraits and funerary steles. The exceptionally rich Byzantine collection links the ancient Greek world to that of modern Greece and is divided into two groups. The first group includes unique examples of bronze and silver household and ecclesiastical vessels, miniature sculptures and enamels, ceramics, manuscripts etc. The second group includes Byzantine and post-Byzantine icons, a number of household vessels from the early Byzantine period, a collection of Byzantine jewellery as well as a large group of crosses, reliquaries, amulets and miniature steatite icons. The collection of historical heirlooms recreates the history of modern Greece from the end of the 18th century onwards. Many of the objects are connected with the Philhellenic movement and others date to the reigns of King Otho and King George. It includes also authentic swords and other weapons which belonged to the heroes of 1821, personal belongings such as Ioannis Kapodistrias’s seal and Lord Byron’s pistols, manuscripts written by the poets Dionysios Solomos, Constantine Cavafy, Kostis Palamas, and Yannis Ritsos, and the Nobel prize certificates and gold medals won by the poets George Seferis and Odysseus Elytis.

A must see! - An excellent museum full of amazing Greek artefacts. An amazing collection housed in a beautiful building. The largest collection of ancient gold jewellery I have ever seen. A must do while in Athens!

The Benaki Experience - We enjoyed the beautiful museum experience. We learned a great deal and loved the added touch of having rooms to see that were like the original Benaki home.

Beautiful experience - A museum that welcomes you as if you were a welcome guest, the structure already presents itself on the outside as an elegant residence. At the entrance, distinguished staff, I found no queue. Exhibition designed to accompany the visitor on the journey of a sublime civilization represented by pieces of great value, statues, depictions, artefacts and jewelery of exquisite workmanship. Leave Benaki with the awareness that the Greeks taught us how to live and that we are indebted to them!

Beautiful - The second floor was my favorite. I love folk costumes and icons and this was beyond beautiful. The museum was breathtaking especially the icon area. Just sit and take 10 minutes to fully enjoy the art. I loved that they placed chairs throughout to give you that intimate experience.

Nice small museum - Small enough to see in an hour or two the Benaki museum gives a good overview of Greek archaeological finds, Greek history and culture. There is a coffee shop with great views and seating is available in most of the exhibit rooms.

America has a lot to learn from history - Each museum we visited held similar treasures from history. This offered more of a timeline. Interesting tour

Scammed - We purchased tickets for for our last day in Athens on Monday June 5th, showed up and couldn’t find an open entrance. After walking around the building multiple times we decided to call the museum who told us it was closed to observe a national holiday. We were really upset because had we known, we would’ve selected tickets for a different day we were in Athens. To add insult to injury, this company REFUSED to give us a refund with zero reasoning! We feel scammed. Just know that they are willing to rip you off by selling you an invalid ticket.
