Hobbiton magic - Our tour guide Malcolm was great. He was very patient and knowledgeable about the area. Kept us on time very well. Hobbiton was a bit crowded but that’s what happens when you have thousands of people shuttled in per day. It was a neat experience especially if you are short on time.

Fun day trip - Josef our guide was amazing! He got us to Hobbiton before the crowds started, we had time for multiple extra stops, and we got ice cream on the way home! Lots of fun seeing Hobbiton and Wai-o-tapu!

You’ll not be disappointed! - WORTH IT! A 3-hour drive but our driver, Dean, made it thoroughly enjoyable with just enough talk and just enough quiet time.

Hobbiton trip - Very nice trip, our guide Alessandro such a lovely man, really knowledgeable, friendly and approachable! The bus also was very nice and I loved the small group vibe, instead of chaotic big groups.

Culturally unsafe and inappropriate guide - Tour guide was nice, but several comments were questionable bordering on racist. The guide made a comment about the richest iwi and said they have been well compensated and yet every year they still ask for more. Also commented on the pronunciation of Taupō, saying how he used to pronounce it as a child then said that now that wouldn’t be right because the Māori push the name to be said differently. Finally, at one point he said “Use your own mind…what’s true what’s not” when discussing the history of Māori. I was in NZ for a research trip and extended my stay for a few days so I could go to Hobbiton and see more of NZ. The research I am apart of focuses on cultural safety…so after a week of learning the beautiful Māori culture, as well horrible harms and oppression Māori people overcame and continue to face today, this was extremely disappointing and extremely inappropriate of the guide. If you are going to have guides comment on the land and the history, make sure they are doing so in a culturally safe and informed way or don’t do it at all.
