- One Tree Hill (Maungakiekie) - Part of Auckland’s volcanic field, formed over 140,000 years ago, it is one of 53 volcanic cones that shaped Auckland’s landscape. Known traditionally as Maungakiekie, it tells the story of the tree. In the 1870s, Sir John Logan Campbell planted totara and pine forests, with a single Monterey pine becoming the hill’s iconic symbol. In 1994 and 1999, it suffered controversial chainsaw damage by Māori activist Mike Smith, leading to the removal of the 125-year-old pine in 2000. It holds cultural significance as a symbol of both European settlement and Māori heritage, offering 360-degree panoramic views of Auckland. Established in 1901 through Sir John Logan Campbell’s generous donation, it represents one of New Zealand’s most significant public land gifts. Managed by The Cornwall Park Trust Board, it is preserved as a public space for future generations, featuring 8,000 trees of 350 different species and 35,000 seasonal flowers grown in dedicated glasshouses, providing a habitat for over 30 bird species.
