The Ajanta and Ellora caves, recognized as some of the best ancient rock-cut caves, can be found near Aurangabad in Maharashtra, India. These caves, decorated with magnificent sculptures, paintings and frescoes, represent a blend of Buddhist, Jain and Hindu cultures, as the site comprises Buddhist monasteries as well as Hindu and Jain temples. The Ajanta caves, numbering 29 and built between the 2nd century BC and 6th century AD, while the Ellora Caves, more extensive and numbering 34, originated between the 6th and 11th Century AD.
