Their seafaring and fishing heritage, which peaked in the first half of the 20th century, is well known for the bravery and determination of their captains, sailors and fishermen during the cod fishing campaigns - a Faina Maior, in the turbulent Arctic and Atlantic Oceans that surround the coasts of Terranova (Canada) and Greenland.

These and other connections between Ílhavo and the sea can be discovered at the Ílhavo Maritime Museum, which not only hosts the museum building but also the only surviving cod fishing trawler. The vessel plays a significant role in the museum, hosting temporary exhibits.
